To answer your rent/school question -

For our family, yes, 42% of our income would be way too much to spend on rent and school alone. But here's the thing - and I didn't see your original post - I really think it depends on WHAT your actual income is.

I mean, if you're bringing home $1,000/mo and $420 of that is going to those 2 expenses alone, you're probably in trouble.

However, if you are bringing home $5,000/mo, you're still left with $2900 for everything else, which would probably cover you easily. See what I'm saying?

Either way, though, I wouldn't be comfortable paying that much - whatever my income. The 25% on rent seems reasonable, though.

I might be missing something but how does DH's job cover YOUR retirement?  IDK if you access to things like IRA accounts and such but you need sometype of retirement in your own name.

If you have addititional children the younger years are the 'cheap' years its when kids get older the expenses get higher and higher.  If you search this forum you will find a couple threads about this.
