Here's the stuff my nine-year-old daughter likes. She's not as big on contemporary pop as she is on, well, '80s pop! But like your daughter, she's all about female singers:
Â
Walk Like an Egyptian, The Bangles -- and lots of others by the Bangles
Rock Lobster, The B-52s
Summer of Love, The B-52s
We Got the Beat, the Go-Gos
Walking on Air, Kerli
Creationist, Kerli (NOT about religious creationism, but about being creative and creating your own life)
Up Up Up, Kerli
Windstorm, School of Seven Bells
Wanna Be, Spice Girls (What a difference a decade makes -- in '90s, we got girl pop about how you have to be nice to my friends and be a giving person if you want to date me ... in 2000s, we get "don't you wish your girlfriend was a freak like me" ...)
Kids in America, Kim Wilde
Heart of Glass, Blondie
Tide Is High, Blondie
Groove Is in the Heart, Dee-Lite
Â
I'll second ABBA, "Just the Way You Are," and "The Dog Days Are Over." She also likes Bruno Mars and is sort of fascinated by Lady Gaga's total willingness to be weird and not a typical pop princess. you REALLY have to pick and choose to find Gaga tunes suitable for a preteen, though ... and even the ones that have innocuous lyrics, like Telephone, have rather skanky videos!
