Diaper rash

I posted about this is in H&H too.  My 21m old has had a yeasty diaper rash off and on for 2 months now.  We usually use Bum Genius diapers, but we were out of town for 2 weeks over Christmas.  We were using the target brand of sposies.  That's what we always use when we need them and we never have a problem.  Toward the end of the trip we got some Luvs.  After a couple of days in those, this rash appeared.  I took him to the doc for an antifungal cream and he's still in the target diapers.  I'd really like to get him back in cloth, but I don't want to have to deal with getting rash cream and yeast out of my BGs.

I thought about getting some plain prefolds and making some wool covers.  It seems like that would be more breathable for him, so will help with the yeast, and also maybe easier to sanitize.  The BGs just seem to hold onto everything.

What do you think?  Any other ideas?  Thanks!

If it were a yeast rash, it should have had some reaction to the cream pretty quickly. If it hasn't, id look for other factors.

Have you done diaper free time? Without a better idea of what the rash looks like, its difficult to suggest what else might work.

The rash is little dots.  The ped thought it was yeast. The cream seems to have helped, but it keeps coming back.  I think maybe we just need to do the cream again and for a lot longer, but I've run out of the rx.  I've seen on here that people have used otc antifungals.  Does anybody know about that?  Can I just get anything?

My DS gets a spotty rash that isn't yeast (never responds to antifungals). It seems to be related to wearing non-natural fibre diapers. Which is funny because for the first 11 months, he couldn't wear natural fibres at all!

Anyway, to make the rash go away, I ended up slathering him in Aveeno zinc cream. At night we used disposables, and in the day I used flushable liners with my cloth. It didn't keep the cream completely off, but it was good enough. Eventually the rash started clearing up, and I can now go virtually without a liner if I'm using a natural fibre, or lanolin and a flushable liner if I'm using the BGs.

I also think that using Kissaluvs Lotion Potion helped. I'm using it now at every change - it's got witch hazel, which seems to work well.

In terms of anti-fungals, you can buy Canesten off the shelf - I found it with the yeast infection creams.

Thanks!  I'm crocheting a wool cover right now.  It's too cold to do much in the way of diaper free time, but I was thinking about switching to prefolds.  When I can, I think I'll have him in those coverless and use the wool when he needs a cover - at least during the day.  I'm also going to crochet some baby legs for him to wear instead of pants.  Hopefully that will help.
