Spent Thursday Night in L&D

Well, that's what I get for posting "Nothing much going on....I don't think my OB appt will be very exciting".

I went to my appointment Thursday afternoon and my blood pressure was up again.  They wanted to monitor the baby, but while we were waiting for the room, the OB decided to do a quick U/S to check the baby's fluid level.  The level was low (slightly below borderline).  After consulting with the OB on duty at the hospital, the office OB came back and said "You need to get to the hospital...we need to get the baby out...and the OB on call won't induce with pit."  So, after sobbing in the parking lot and processing the fact that I was probably going to have another C/S, I drove home got my stuff together and DP & I headed to the hospital.

There are too many details to type out right now, but essentially I got there, spent the night being monitored and pumped full of IV fluids, and by morning my fluid was up and my blood pressure was down & they released me.  If the office OB had said "I need you go go get IV fluids and spend the night being monitored", that would have been one thing.  But she jumped right to "We have to get the baby out NOW".  I think most people would have gone in and just had the C/S, but the OB on call at the hospital knew that I want a VBAC, so she started this other treatment plan.  I appreciate it, but it would have been nice to have a heads up.

I also had my membranes swept twice and I'm up to 4cm & 70% effaced.

So, how I'm home, 38 weeks and on bedrest to keep my blood pressure down.  It seems silly because I'm full-term, and I don't necessarily need to keep the baby IN, but I appreciate having an excuse to not go to work.

BTW- I'm REALLY bad at bedrest.  Really bad.

I can see how trying to keep your blood pressure down and being sent in for an immediate c-section might not be compatible.  So glad everything's ok, and excited that you're so close to baby!  I read that effacement >50% and more dilation upon admission is a good indicator of a successful vbac!  Sounds like you're already there.  Just relax and get some rest.  There will be time for everything else after.  :)

No kidding, right? Way to maintain calm, OB...

If you are really bad at bed rest anyway, you might want to try to get to a pool. Hanging out in the water up to your arm pits for 20 min a day can do wonders for your bp. Hawthorne is a BP stabilizer too.

Glad it all worked out and baby is still cooking! You can be our official March DDC birth-watcher while on bedrest. Keep an eye out for more babies!

Hi there...wow, that would have upset me too...but sounds like it turned out well...I was on bedrest for a while with my second and was not good at it either. It was more like house arrest for me and I tried not to lift too much....hang in there Mama!

Sounds really stressful. With my DD I had high BP at the end and went in at 37 weeks with a migraine/high BP. The OB on duty said the exact same thing - "We've got to get this baby out NOW" but thankfully my midwife had a cooler head and after spending 2 nights in the hospital that same OB cleared us for homebirthing! I think that some doctors just go to that place of highest risk/most fear right away, and others don't. I'm glad it was a good outcome for you too - even if you are on bedrest!

Wow, yeah, very stressful. So glad for you and baby that the other OB had a cooler head and was respectful of your wishes! I was on bedrest for 2.5 months with my first, it really is awful. At least you know it can't be very long! Try to stay sane, we'll be thinking of you!

I went back to the OB today and saw the OB I'd seen in the hospital.  The first thing she said to me was "Look, I'm really sorry about what happened on Thursday.  There was a breakdown in communication and it should NOT have happened that way."  It turns out that the OB that sent me to the hospital hadn't even actually TALKED to the OB at the hospital.  I told her what I've been saying all along- if I'd been told that I was going to the hospital to have IV fluids and be monitored, it would have been no problem.  She agreed that that's exactly what they should have told me.  Oh well, water under the bridge.  Now I know to avoid that particular OB and take what she says with a grain of salt.

Onto brighter news...my blood pressure has improved, my fluid is close to the level it was when I left the hospital, I'm a good 4cm & 70% effaced and I've been having random (but strong) contractions periodically.  I'm also shedding some mucous...it's not chunky pieces like I've heard mamas describe, but I'm very "mucous-y" and it's occasionally thicker and slightly blood-tinged.

Also, my sister is here until Thursday because DP is going back to work tomorrow and my kids right now are NOT conducive to lowering blood-pressure.

Sounds like all good news!  ELV!

I'm glad it worked out and very, very glad your sister is there with you.

I would lose my mind too if I were put on strict bed rest!

Soon........
