compost bin full

Thread Starter

We have filled up our first compost bin (purchased) and now we are putting everything in the garbage making it super stinky.  Aside from starting a new compost pile, any simple solutions to keep the kitchen garbage smelling better?

You can put super stinky stuff in the freezer until garbage day.

Also, once the compost is ready, you can use it to make room for more scraps.

Are you turning the compost bin? Not certain what kind of a bin you purchased, but we have ours made from old pallets and every 2 weeks, we pull it all out with a pitchfork and then pile it back in, thus mixing it all up, and speeds up the decomposition process.

We have a 3 bin system, and fill them up in order, by the time we are to the thrid bin the first bin is ready to be harvested and put on the garden, etc.

What is it in your garbage that is stinky? Our garbage only stinks when we have meat in it, as meat is not really compostable like veggies and scraps, etc. I would go with the previous posters idead of keeping stuff in that freezer until it's trash day, etc.

Also, could look into a worm composter, like a normal compost pile, you don't want to put meat or dairy in it, but the worms can eat half their weight each day in food scraps, so another source to reduce and reuse.
