Diaper Covers

Thread Starter

Well, I am planning to CD my second child when she arrives (due in 4.5 weeks!) and have a stash of cloth diapers already (about 48, I think.)  We don't have alot of money to spend, so I've been picking up diapers and other baby items when they go on sale in area stores.  Unfortunately, I have yet to find anyone around here that sales diaper covers/plastic pants (unless its a yard sale and those tend to look rather... unhealthy.)

Where is the best (and least expensive) place to get diaper covers from?  I'm not looking for anything fancy or overly pretty.  She's going to have enough pretty clothes that we don't have to worry about decorating the diapers, too. :)  How many covers would you suggest getting?

Oh, and since I have seen them advertised, I might should add that wool is not an option since I'm allergic to it.  Even if she is lucky enough not to inherit my allergy, it would make it very difficult for me to change her if that's what she was wearing.

Thanks in advance!

Well, GMD (Green Mountain Diapers) sell the standard pull-on nylon pants for $6 a pair and they also sell the Bummis super lites which are a little nicer and have snaps instead of just pulling them on and they are $10 a pair.

My personal recommendation would be to keep your eyes pealed on Craigslist, ebay and other online market places for some used covers. I have gotten some gently used covers for a fraction of the new price.

As far as how many, I would say 4 or 5 will get you by.

I also think you need about 4-5 covers.  If you can get a good price on some snap-on or touch tape ones I think you'll find that handier than the pull-up type.  As an added bonus touch tape or snap-on covers will also be more adjustable so you'll get a better fit/less chance for leaks etc. and they may also fit for longer.  Bummies covers are fine, but I really have preferred my Thirsties covers. Another way to save a bit on your covers is to get the ones that are adjustable in size.  The Thirsties adjustable covers are called the Duo Wrap and come in 2 sizes, one for 0-9 months and the other for  9-36 months.

I second the recommendation for Thristies Duos. Only two sizes to buy and they are a quality cover that fits all shapes and sizes of baby. They also come in snap and velcro. There are cheaper options, but is it worth saving less than $50 over two plus years to get covers that annoy you. 4-5 size 1s (6-18 lb) and 4 size 2s (18-40 lb) would see you through.
