Take the curtains or leave them?

We are getting ready to move.  I'm not sure on this certain issue, so I thought I'd ask here.  On the contract it says "Sellers to leave window blinds".  We have custom wood blinds on some of our windows, mostly the ones in the living room and in the kitchen.  Other windows have curtains.  I would expect to leave behind the wood blinds, but I'm not sure about the curtains.  They are mostly cheap Walmart curtains.

I don't really care about most of them, but the ones in DS's room are courdoroy curtains and a nice brushed nickle rod with ceramic balls on the end that are white with red stripes, both of which I bought at Pottery Barn Kids.  I really don't want to leave those behind.

What do you think?  What would you do?

I'd assume blinds refer to horizontal or vertical levlor type things.  Curtains are a totally different.  When we sold our house I took the curtains with us and left the actual blinds.

Curtains belong to you!

I've always left the curtains.  They are 'attached' to the house.

I agree:  curtains are yours.  :)

I would think that the way it's worded you're only obligated to leave the wooden blinds.  You could leave the curtains that you didn't feel particularly attached to if you wanted, but who knows if the new owners would even want them...They may not match their decor.  I know the curtains I have in my house "go" with my furniture and decorations... Someone else may have a completely different room set up and the curtains may not match that at all... But things like shades and blinds are universal and "go" with anything.

Leave the blinds but the curtains and rods are yours if you want them.

The last house we bought had all custom curtains and the windows are odd sizes so they'd need to be custom again.  It was written into the contract that all curtains and rods stayed.  Otherwise, they are yours to take.

Happy moving!

If it is not specifically in the contract that you need to leave the curtains or "all window treatments", then the curtains are yours to take.  When we moved, I took the curtains from my son's room as my MIL had made them for him, but otherwise I left the rest.  They wouldn't have worked in the new house and I felt like it was one less expense for the people buying our house if I left them there.

Thanks everyone!  I think we are just going to take DS's curtains and leave the rest.  I does just state window "blinds" so I take that to mean just the horizontal blinds.  They are white to match the trim in the house, so they go with anything.  The curtains are cheap Walmart ones, so if they want to pitch them they can.  Less for us to move.  ;)

we've bought 3 houses in the pas 2 yrs.  always leave curtains.  never had a situation where the old curtains would even work in the new house.  i think all our contracts said window treatments
