"Peace Club"

Thread Starter

DD1 (7) wants to start a Peace Club.  She is very interested in peace, justice, nonviolence etc. lately (for several months actually).  We have lots of very involved, thoughtful conversations prompted by her about peace.

I don't want to reinvent the wheel if there is some sort of organization out there which has already been created for kids who have an interest in peace --- does anyone know if there is such a thing out there?

She's in Cloverbuds (for 4-H) already and we are not interested in Scouts or Campfire.

I did find this organization -- I have no idea how reputable it might be?  http://www.kidscare.org/GetToKnowKCC

(Kids Care Clubs).  There are kids' peace clubs in Kosovo, and this site mentioned a Kids Care Peace Club that had an event in New York .....????

I can think of some things that could be done with a "Peace Club" - like reading the kids' version of Three Cups of Tea, and raising money for the CAI's school program (Pennies for Peace) .... volunteering in the community at food pantry or soup kitchen .... I'd honestly like to plug into a structure someone else has already built rather than having it all on my shoulders, though.

I've been putting off asking about this here on MDC but just found dd1 sitting down to the computer, she said she was going to "Google for kids' peace clubs," and I thought I'd better start working on this rather than putting it off.

ETA:  I also found this site, it seems more a resource site than an organization, and some links are broken:

They aren't exactly "Peace Clubs" (since they are mostly concerned with poverty, human rights and development) but you and your DD might find some inspiration at:

Free the Children

Unicef

Right to Play

Good luck!

Out of curiosity, I googled "Hiroshima Children Organization", which led me to HIroshima Peacebuilders Centre a government program for civilian education and service.

And googling again for "peacebuilders" led me to Peacebuilders International. It appears to focus on youth at risk and justice, but there may be something there in their programs about learning to resolve conflict without violence that might be helpful for a children's group.
