16-month old wakes from sleep screaming/crying

We've been co-sleeping/bed-sharing since my DS was born. Just within the past couple of weeks, he's been waking up screaming and crying. This happens about 30 minutes or so after he falls asleep. I go to bed at the same time as he does, so I'm right there with him. Most of the time, he would turn and search for the boob and I'd nurse him in bed. But lately, not even nursing has comforted him. I literally have to pick him up and he motions to be taken out of the room. And sometimes, I can walk back in the room after a few minutes, nurse him and he'd fall asleep. Sometimes, my DH reads him a few stories in the story chair located in another room. I'm not sure if this is significant or not, but I think he's teething. He has 7 teeth (4 top and 3 bottom). It looks like one of his bottom tooth is breaking through and a few on top, maybe molars? Anyway, has anyone's LO ever wake up screaming? I'm not sure if it's night terrors, but the screaming/crying lasts for a few seconds until I pick him up. Thanks for any help.

Last time that happened to us, my ds got really sick with strep throat and ear infection. He woke up from the pain in his ears. Could your child be in pain?
