Hello ladies! I have a pg friend that is due in aug with her first baby(2nd pg, early miscarriage a year or so ago) and she just bought 'what to expect when expecting'....I almost gagged on her words! LOL!

She isnt crunchy by ANY means...but I was wondering if you guys could recommend some books? I do know that she will be in a hospital(same one as me, but diff DR(no idea how 'lax' this dr is), and getting an epidural.

Any suggestions will be grateful! Thank you!!

Are you looking for just a "general" pregnancy book?  I really liked "The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth" by Sheila Kitzinger.  It walks through the whole pregnancy, talks about different stages, etc. but with a more natural bend, if you will.

On Amazon you can look at the table of contents and some of the content, if that helps:

Ola...yes! I'm looking for a general book that ISN'T that silly book she bought. This book looks so cool! If I wasn't so far along, I'd get that book! I may gift it to her...

Thank you!!!

I'd still like some other book rec's if anyone has them...I'd like to give her a list to choose from.

I HIGHLY recommend The Birth Book by Dr. Sears.  I didn't know anything about AP or natural pregnancy/birth when I was newly pg with my DS and this book truly opened my eyes to how things should/could be.

I read on a blog that Your Best Birth (by Ricki Lake and someone else) really turned around the blogger's opinion of unmedicated birth . . . she thought she would hate the book and read it just to scoff at the authors' hippy ways, but then ended up agreeing and went on to have a "spiritual" unmedicated birth.  Of course, that will depend on your friend's personality, if she's willing to read it at all.

I think she would be willing to read it...but i think she will still do the epidural...she's pretty pain intolerant with ANYTHING. I am making a list of books and going to email her all the suggestions. I had to explain what a doula is to her...well, to most of my friends...lol nobody knows what a doula is. And they are all 2-15 or so years older than me! Lol oh well, you live and learn right?

Thank you for your suggestions...keep em coming! smile.gif

Here's a list of books that my sister liked when she was pregnant, and ones that my friend and I liked and have as reference books in our natural healing shop:

1."The Pregnancy Book" by. Dr. Sears (my sister liked this)

2. "The Birth Book" by. Dr. Sears (my sister liked this)

3. Your Pregnancy, Week by Week (my sister liked this)

4. "Birthing From Within" by. Pam England

5. "Birth Your Way" by. Sheila Kitzinger

6. "Active Birth" by. Janet Balaskas

7. "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" (my sister liked this)

8. "The Nursing Mothers Companion (my sister liked this)

9. "Eating Expectantly"

10. "You, Having a Baby" by. Dr. Oz

11. "Preparing for Birth with Yoga" by. Janet Balaskas

12. "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth" by. Ina May Gaskin

13. "Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding" by. Ina May Gaskin

Hope this helps!  My sister didn't like the What to Expect pregnancy book, because she said it was hard to follow and found that the Dr. Sears book and the week by week books were wonderful!
