My son is 6 weeks old and from birth he's been breastfed and also supplemented (started supplemeting at 6 days old). I was told that my milk wasn't in so I had to give similac advanced being that my son was born 9lb 7 oz and I wasn't "producing enough" for a baby his size. But, I wanted to EBF so I did not give him the formula in the hospital- I knew I had colostrum and that he had a great latch and in a few days my milk would come in and we'd be fine. In the hospital there did not seem to be an issue with his BMs. He pooped just fine. after we brought him home from the hospital, he immediately stopped pooping and did not have a BM for 3 days, and also did not urinate much. We took him to our pediatrician and she said I needed to supplement him because he was dehydrated. I believe it was a glycerin suppository she used to get him to have a BM. We then started supplementing him and he became more regular...and was such a content and happy boy. I saw a lactation consultant who said I had plenty of milk so he became almost EBF- with just a few ounces of formula per day. As he grew I felt I needed to supplement more- he was constantly starving and I was exhausted and sore from BFing. so, needless to say i started to supplement more...and he was still content and calm. Soon after, he started having issues with gas, and discomfort- (pushing, grunting, straining, fussing) he developed a lot of redness around his anus and a rash on his face and was not pooping. Doctor then diagnosed milk allergy(at 4 weeks of age- she also tested him for microscopic blood and came back positive) and switched him to Similac Alimentum, and I cut out all dairy from my diet. improvement was almost immediate- he started pooping again and his rash lessened as well as the redness around his anus (and tested negative for microscopic blood about a week later) We are now Bfing and supplementing about 10-12 oz per day of Alimentum and it seems as though he is going right back to square one...(pushing, grunting, straining, fussing) sometimes going 24-48 hours without a BM. I am at my wits end! Not sure what to do- its very overwhelming to be this helpless with the little one. He has days of being perfectly content and then he has days/nights where i feel like he is CONSTANTLY straining to pass a BM. can anyone help?
Milk Allergy??? this is a long post
I had a similar problem. My milk didn't come in good at all and my daughter didn't do well with formula. She wouldn't have a BM for 3-4 days, get very fussy, etc. I was told it wasn't abnormal for a newborn to do that. After looking at the ingredients in popular brands of infant formula I decided to make my own formula from goat's milk. I saw a change in 1 day. There are a couple of good sites to look at. The Weston Price Foundation has an infant formula recipe and if you google goat's milk infant formula or homemade infant formula you should be able to find something. It could also be the synthetic vitamins that are in formula. Try looking for a formula with natural vitamins. I heard Vermont Baby infant formula is pretty good. Good luck. I know how frustrating it is.
There is also amino acid based formula you can make, but I would consult with a naturopath for a recipe. I would suggest trying to increase your supply so you can wean him from the supplements since he does best with your milk. If you need help with that you can go to a LLL meeting or consult a lactation consultant. You can use Fenugreek, Mother's Milk Tea, oatmeal and herbs to name a few. Pumping can also help. It is not abnormal for an EBF baby to go 7 days without a poop. The important thing is the baby keeps on the typical schedule fo him. If he normally poops once a day, then 4 days would concern me. I hope you are able to get him happy and healthy soon.
