CPR for a toddler

I think being trained and up to date on CPR and heimlic maneuver (sp?) is really important. When DS was born I bought an in-home infant CPR training course and dummy from the Red Cross. It was cheap - like $30 - and I asked anyone watching DS to take it to stay up on their skills. (MIL lied and said she did, but that's another story!)

So now that DS is a toddler I'm having a hard time determining what positions to use. If he's chocking, do I still flip him on to his stomach and pound on his back? Or do I do stomach thrusts like i would an adult?

Where can I get a training course that doesn't take 6 hours? That's all the Red Cross Here offers.

that really depends in large part on your size and your child's size. If you can effectively do techniques as if he were an infant? In that case it is fine to use those methods. If you can't it is time to look at doing childs (not adults).

call our local fire dept/ambulance and see if they have anyone that teaches classes in house. if they don't, they would be able to better direct you to who does teach. there is american heart association as well as red cross classes. infant cpr is is 2 fingers fo rcompressions, while child is the heel of your hand. technique is going to largely depend on the size of the child. depth of compression is different as well. it is best to have someone trained go thru it with you.
