Creative Nursing

My son is 11 months old and still loves to nurse, which makes me completely happy.  He continues to nurse about every 3 hours and every 3 hours at night (I think in part because we sleepshare).

I need some advice or a few laughs to get me through this one problem we're having...

Hunter likes to sip a little on one side, sip a little on the other, go back sip from the left, sip from the right, back and forth this goes on for about 15 minutes.  He likes to stand and do it, sit down, lay down, he's all over the place!  It's been going on for about a month.  He has learned to pull my shirt up and when I try to get him to stay on track with one side he hits my chest really hard or whines and throws his head back in a tantrum.  I don't want to be too firm with him, I want nursing to be a pleasant experience at all times.  But my nipples start to hurt when he does this and it's less than pleasant for me.

Any advice or can you relate and have a funny story to share?

just tell him what's going on with you. 11 months old, they understand! you want him to respect your body... it is your body.

as for the switching sides, no doubt there is a reason for it. he's probably discovered that it makes the milk flow faster or something.

but if it starts to hurt, tell him it does, and gently suggest that he do it such-and-such way instead since it doesn't hurt mommy.

ps: keep nursing, it gets more and more fun the older and more verbal they get!

Thank you! :) This is good advice.  I do tell him from time to time, but I will be consistent.  I absolutely love nursing and am excited to find out what our nursing relationship will be like as he grows older and more communicative.
