Hello all! I've been a stay at home mom for the first year of my LO life and now I want to get a "real job" (ha ha, insert sarcasm here).  I am 26 and need some advice from all you ladies about what career's have been ideal for working at home (at least 20 hours a week) and supporting your families.  Truth be told I could be happy doing a hundred different jobs... in choosing a career I want to make a salary that can support my family and be in the house with my daughter (with childcare).  I like the idea of starting my own business but in my research haven't found much information about how different work from home careers are compatible with mothering.  Some of the idea's I have been thinking about are an exporting company specializing in organic/sustainable goods, an natural foods demonstration company for my regional area, an in home daycare, or an herbal medical baked goods company specializing in gluten/soy/dairy free treats.

The exporting company seems like a lot to learn in the beginning and is difficult to break into.  Profits are based on commissions, which can be good or bad, I could take time off if I wanted to have another child but might be forced back sooner than I would like because while I don't work there will be no income.  There's international travel (which I love) but this might be tricky with breastfeeding.

Food demo company doesn't have a huge profit margin, requires a car, but is easy, fun and over time I could train other demonstrators and not have to work on site making more of a passive income.  This idea isn't something that I would want to get stuck doing for years and years but might be a good place to start?

Daycare is a job that I could continue to spend my days with my daughter.  I have doubts about if it is profitable enough though to support our growing family.

Medically needed baked goods company has a huge market in my area.  Although it is legal in my jurisdiction on a city and state level there still is some gray area at the federal level about medical marijuana.  And it's not something that I could openly share about with some of my more conservative family members.

It seems like an idea job would be manufacturing some sort of product that could be drop shipped to a customer after ordering from the website, a lot of work on the front end then just marketing.  But I am hesitant to enter manufacturing business because I have no experience and it seems intimidating.  Should I look further into this area?

So, what do you think?  Are you doing something fabulous that I should look into?

Subbing...

I, too, would love to start my own business, but have just about zero start-up capitol available.  I was fortunate enough to be allowed to work from home until my son was 18mo and then was forced to return to my regular office position full-time.  I very much want to find a career that would allow me to work mostly from home.  I have an MBA, but no real entrepreneurial experience.  I am very interested in hearing some of the responses to your question.
