Something Italian for baby?

We've been living in Italy for about a year and a half and are now getting ready to move back to the States. I'm pregnant with my first (due in October) and wondering if there is anything Italian that I can bring back for the baby. Italian baby books are an option, although I think with internet bookstores we'll be able to get some of that even in the US. Anyone have ideas for something that might be harder to find in the US? Or can you think of any particularly good books?

hello and congratulations on your pregnancy!

We only lived in Italy for three months, so I can't suggest any particular books or anything, but we have lived in Germany and France and now the UK, so I always try to have things that are typical of the place we have lived.

I would buy some Italian baby clothes, including some that have something written in Italian on them (things like bibs and socks are good), and maybe a t-shirt or something with the name of the town where you have been living for when the baby is older.

I would bring a few books, some Italian music CDs -lullabies and children's music for example -  perhaps a handmade toy from the region, as well as a more permanent keepsake like baby or toddler dishes, a figurine, or a charm or pendant that your baby could wear on a chain when s/he is older.

Sorry, I don't know how I missed your reply.

Thanks for the ideas! We've picked up a few books. Unfortunately, I haven't found any handmade toys, but I like your other ideas for something more permanent.

Hi there,

I lived in italy for a while and I am married to an italian. Typical baby presents in Italy include anything silver; we got a lot fo silver picture frames and some jewlery for both our girls when born. These things last although aren't necessarily italian. Italian babies can't grow without Plasmon biscuits =) so you could grab a box. Clothes are okay, maybe a bib with italian saying on it, but they only get used for a short time and you can actuall find them online a lot of times. What region are you in if you don't mind sharing? Do you have any Italian neighbors you can ask?

I think Italian kids music is a good one. Even if you find this on the internet its better to listen to it and maybe you can find one that is regional. A good children's author who is Italian is Leo Lionni if you are looking for books.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm in Rome. (for just a few more days!) I've asked my only Italian friend with children, but she told me the best toys are German and the cutest clothes are French! i'll check the bookstore for Leo Lionni and will look into music.
