carpet sweeper?

We have mostly tile floors, but the area rugs tend to get dirty in between the weekly vacuum-ings (which is all I can manage!)  In Heaven On Earth, it's recommended to use a non-motorized carpet sweeper...has anyone tried one?  Do they work at all ;)  Any brands you'd recommend?  Thanks...not sure if this is quite the right forum to post this question...

My parents have had several from Fuller Brush.  They work on the premise of static electricity.  Are they as good as vacuuming? No.  They are quiet and will pick up lint from carpets.  Things did look better after my mom used it.  My grandma had one, too.  Limited success with crumbs on bare floors.
