black walnut tree solutions?

Thread Starter

my neighbor has a large blk walnut tree that overhangs our yard. we like the shade, but i realized last year it's the reason i can't grow anything in my small urban yard.

i was thinking of putting in a raised bed in the sunniest area with new soil/compost/ etc not contaminated by the blk walnut juice. i wonder if this would work.

any suggestions?

You could trim back all branches that overhang. You could chop away at the roots in your soil. The tree may inhibit the growth of your own plants. With a raised bed you might be able to grow something. I try not to grow near the neighbors large trees, but I have put in bushes that seem to be doing well.

I think raised beds are the way to go, for sure.
