20 month old that weaned at 15 months

Hi

I have a 20 month old toddler, who self-weaned at around 15months. Once he completely stopped breastfeeding, I didn't give him any other extra milk of any kind, for some reason it didn't even cross my mind to. I know it has been 5 months since he weaned completely, but he still is only 20 months, and my older DS breastfed for much longer, so should I still give him some other kind of milk or something? He does eat a variety of foods, he loves to eat, but I just don't know why I didn't even consider or think of this when he first weaned. Any advice?

TIA.

I'm certainly not a nutritional expert, but I have a 17 month old that weaned herself recently (I think because my milk changed to colostrum because I'm pregnant). She can't tolerate milk, but she can tolerate other dairy products like cheese and yogurt. I don't think you need to give him any milk as long as he's getting enough calcium, protein, etc from other sources.

I'm going to move this over to our Nutrition forum where the nutrition experts hang out.

Thanks, yeah that's what I was thinking. I was pregnant too when my DS weaned himself.

If they weaned because of pregnancy, I wouldn't consider that a self-weaning.  I only mention this because weaning means that they no longer need the milk---- if instead the milk source is compromised in some way (taste or amount) a child may wean but still very much need the milk source.

This is one topic I am willing to take the AAP's suggestion on: a full-fat milk source until at least 2 years of age.  If I had to wean a child prematurely, I would definatley encourage a full-fat milk source to make sure they were getting enough fat and nutrition for optimal brain development.

Good luck!

Thank you. He does drink whole milk, just at random times throughout the day, I haven't been making sure he gets a certain amount. How much would you give or make sure he has per day?
