How many covers for nb? Will preemie pf's fit a big nb?

If I were to trifold a LL preemie pf, would it work for an 8lb+ nb? Or are they just much too small?

I already have a dozen, so just wondering if I can count on them working in the beginning for the new babe to be.

How many covers might I need if I want to "trifold" 24 flats/prefolds? I don't want to over buy covers (I'd rather supp with sposies), but it would be nice to get max cd usage, kwim? 

I remember with ds2, he just had teeny little poops, so we could reuse the same cover, even with trifolding. But I'm sure it could be much different with this babe to be.

Preemie pf are tiny! I thought they would work and ordered a bunch for my boy who ended up being 8 and a half lbs and really the prefolds looked like they would work for 4-6.5 lbs or so in my opinion. Way smaller than I'd imagined. At that size, you can get away with the infant sized prefolds folded down or you could get the GMD (green mountain diaper) newborn prefolds or some other "capri" style prefold.

I read different recommendation for amount of covers. Some are happy and content with as little as 4 and some feel the need for 8. I think 6 would be my preferred minimum for that stage. I like having 6 covers up until my kids are eating more solids - less poopy covers.

After that, 4 or 5 is plenty. HTH

I use preemie pfs for hankies to give you an idea of their size.  They're truly tiny.  And there's not much there to absorb with.  But infant PFs are endlessly useful - I still use mine to stuff night-time pockets, since they fit better lengthwise (trifold) than my red edge, which hang out the back. 

As for number of covers - for trifolding, I'd say at least 6, and expect you may have to wash every night.  I would get the kind with wipe-clean interiors if that's your plan though, so small messes can just be wiped off. 

I could never trifold without getting it on the cover... until just the last few weeks, nearly every poop has been messy, and he's almost 18 mos.
