Hospital or wait?

I went to the perinatologists office yesterday for my weekly visit with him and my BP was high 140/91 and I always run 120 ish over 70. NST and soon of babies were great, but there was a little protein in my urine. He said go to the hospital if I have headaches shortness of breath, etc.

Well after the visit, our vet called with some bad news about our 13 y/o dog, whom he has been treating there for 3 days. There is nothing more that can be done for him (he can no longer walk) and needs to be put down today (sat) greensad.gif so of course I bawled my eyes out. Took an epsom salt bath, and then developed a headache later on that evening, right before bed.

Went to bed, and woke up with an even worse headache (migraine) BP was 138/88. Decided it was probably from crying earlier that day, took 2 tylenol and went back to bed. Woke up again, headache still here and sys BP (wrist cuff machine which is typically accurate) was at 141/93! Systolic seems to be fluctuating from 133-141 diastolic from 83-93.

Its 330 am, tomorrow is sat, my only option would be going to L&D in the am because both my OB and Peri are closed. Babies are moving well and often I should add.

My fear is they're going to pressure me to have a c section, simply because that's how they are (im 36+1, babies are 6+ pounds and both breech right now), regardless of whether this is true pre-e or just stress from our coming loss.

Should I go to the fire station tomorrow am and see how the BP is before deciding? Do u think i should just go regardless?
We have to be at the vets at 1130 and I KNOW it will be high after that.

I feel like a ninny for asking, but WWYD?? redface.gif

Oh Nanette, I'm so sorry to hear this.  We lost our beloved dog unexpectedly in early February and I was a wreck for a week or two.

If it were me, I'd first assess how comfortable I was with the babies health.  If you think your blood pressure is going to be detrimental to them, then I'd go in right away.

However, if I thought it was going to be okay, I might go and test at the firehall in the morning (just to be sure) and then go be with my dog and then re-assess after you put her down.  I didn't think I'd ever be able to be with my dog when he died, but it was totally where I needed to be at the time, and I was grateful to have had those final moments.  If that's important to you, then see if you can make it happen.

If your BP is high (and I personally think those numbers are not that high) because you are upset about your dog, then they are high because you are upset about your dog and not because you are sick... right?

I hope you went in Nanette.  Slightly elevated BP under stress late term isn't terribly alarming, but possible cerebral edema (severe headache not relieved by Tylenol) + slightly elevated BP + protein = L&D visit for me.  Pre-e progresses differently for everyone, and the concern of headache is seizure which can occur independent of severely elevated pressure.  For me (based on my history and research) it certainly is a better-safe-than-sorry scenario.

I am very sorry for the loss of your furry friend.  I can only imagine how awful that must be to cope with at this point in your pregnancy.  {{{HUGS}}}

i went in last pregnancy with similar numbers. high...but not too high. then there was a day where i had a headache and numbness in an arm, i think. i knew it was probably nothing but better safe than sorry.

i might be naive but i really don't think they would push for an intervention unless you really needed it (which chances are, you won't)

in.

sorry about the puppy. i've got one who's getting older and just the thought of it breaks my heart.

I'm so sorry to hear about your doggy. There's nothing quite so miserable as the pain of losing those members of our families.

I hope your headache went away. Take care of yourself, and don't hesitate to get checked if you feel worse. You can always ask that they check for protein in the urine before you agree to any early delivery scenarios.

Thanks for the condolences mamas, and the advice. I did end up going in and I'm very glad I did. My BP ended up going down, but he migraine didn't go away until they gave me percocet. Blood tests also revealed that I have thrombocytopenia. My numbers were a little low a couple weeks ago 122- when they checked again at the hospital they had fallen to 107, so they admitted me for observation. 24 hour urine showed protein at 200, which is normal (should be under 300) but my platelets fell again to 104 6 hours after a repeat. Then they rose to 113, so the docs let me go Sunday evening.

Going for a repeat today to see what they look like. Oh and babies are healthy as ever those little blood suckers wink1.gif

I put my puppy down yesterday. The vet took care of him personally, and we spent about an hour and a half saying goodbye. Hardest thing I've ever had to do. 12 years of loyalty and friendship and I felt like I was betraying him. But he would never walk again, and his pancreas was failing. He wagged his tail every time I kissed him, even though he was obviously miserable. My head said it was the kindest thing to do, but the heart disagreed,KWIM?

Anyway, thank you thank you thank you for the help, knew I could count on MDC mamas smile.gif

Oh Nanette, I'm so glad you went in!  Pre-e is one of the scariest things to me, and totally better safe than sorry (my understanding is that with pre-e the babies are okay, but the mom is not).  And I'm really sorry about your dog.  I'm glad that you got to spend the time you needed, but wow--heart wrenching!

So glad you got checked out and are doing well aside from the thrombocytopenia.  And that the babies are thriving!  Blood suckers is right ;)  Many, many condolences on your pet's passing.  You did make the compassionate choice.

Sadly, this isn't the truth.  It's a crapshoot who is impacted more severely and to what degree.  Sometimes mom has few symptoms but baby is IUGR due to placental insufficiency or any of a variety of other issues; sometimes mom gets so sick her kidneys shut down and she seizes, but the baby is fine.  You just never know. That's why I am so passionate about getting checked with any inkling that something may be amiss--pre-e is so unpredictable!
