Hi. Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to read this. :)
My daughter has had a chronic wet cough day and night with lots of swallowing and sometimes she spits stuff up and swallows it again. I've been keeping a food diary and noticed that the sooner she had breastmilk or food before she laid down, she was more likely to spit up or cough/gag. She also had a stuffy nose, mostely at night and she sneezed about once or twice a day, indoor or out. She is almost three years old. We took her to see a doctor one month ago and she was diagnosed with asthma. She was given a puffer that we have not had to use yet.
I researched ALOT and I'm pretty sure that she is having some reflux issues. We made lifestyle changes and we saw some major improvements at night and a slight improvement during the day.
I took her to a different doctor one week ago and she said that the first doctor was much too hasty in diagnosing my daughter with asthma especially without doing any testing. I thought it was strange that she never listened to my daughter's lungs or even touched her. Probably because she wasn't coughing when we were in the office and she doesn't look sick. She said that the chronic could be caused by reflux. She also said it it could be reactive airways disease because of the hot dry air from our heating system and an increase in dust mites and other indoor air pollution because the windows are not opened very much in the winter. I did some dust mite cleaning around the house. She did not give me any reflux medication to rule that out because she knows that we try to avoid medications if we can. Who doesn't?
Well, over the last couple of days, I think she has come down with a cold. She has all the typical cold symptoms, like her nose is runny and she is sneezing a bit more and her cough as become MUCH more frequent and I can hear her swallowing much more often. We took her to a third different doctor yesterday and he said that she definately does not have asthma, which I loved hearing. He said it is usually a combination of things. He believes it is reactive airways disease (which he said about 70% of children suffer from to some extent)Â from the stuff I mentioned above and maybe some reflux issues, although she was never actually checked for by any of the doctors. He said that her condition was being aggravated by some sort of a viral infection and that her throat was really red.
He gave her some antibiotics to take care fo the cold. I also bought some good probiotics for her to take along with them.
Her cough has improved slightly this morning and I'm sure she has a common cold.
I've heared a lot of mixed info regarding antibiotics and I've never had to give her any medication before except for tylenol once.
Apparently 10% of the population are allergic to them??? ![]()
If it is a viral infection like the last doctor said, then wouldn't antibiotics be of no use??? unless he wanted to make sure it wasn't bacterial. I wouldn't normally give her antibiotics for a common cold!
I plan on giving them to her. Can anybody ease my fears, help me understand what's going on and tell me what you think about the antibiotic prescription for her case?
I've been taking her to a chiropractor who says all the doctors we have been seeing are the worst ones. He said they should be sending her to a pediatrician and checking her for things like cystic fibrosis, which is horribly scary. :( I checked out the symptoms and she doesn't seem to match them. Â
Thank you so much for reading this. I'm so sorry it's so long.
Help!
