Forgetting how to nurse?

Thread Starter

My 17 month old DD is mostly weaned because my supply dried up during my pregnancy. I'm producing colostrum now, but she is quickly losing interest in nursing. She only asks to nurse every 2-3 days and only lasts about 30 seconds. If she really wants to self-wean, that's okay with me. I'm worried that once the baby is born she will have an interest in nursing again, but not remember how.

Any opinions/experiences?

DD cut back on nursing when the milk dried up, but continued until DD2 was born and is now still nursing.

If you want her to tandem nurse, I would offer a couple times a day for her to nurse now. When I was pregnant, DD1 cut down to nursing once a day at bedtime. She was fine with knowing how to nurse after my milk came in with DD2, she just chose not to nurse because she wanted the baby to have it, (that was fine with me!), but she was a lot older.

I had one forget. Another forgot, but then remembered and started nursing again 6 months later.

I got pg last year and my just turned 3 year old weaned herself. She started nursing again several months later though her latch was a little off. She's managed to fix it though. Now I have a 3 month old and an almost 4 year old tandeming and it's great. My older dc started forgetting how to latch around age 3.5 as well but I never could get him fixed. So I guess it depends on the child.
