Experience with roses?

Tell me everything you know about roses please. :)

Did you have any successes and failures? Anything you wish you knew before you started? Any varieties you prefer over others (I'm in zone 5, if it matters).

I lurve roses. If you get an older variety suited to your climate (no idea, I've only lived in zone 9) they will grow like weeds.

Go to your local nursery or even the plant section of your home depot. What would you like in you roses? Color, scent, etc. This will narrow it down some.

Plant roses in full sun, don't be affraid of aggressively trimming back during spring (get tons more blooms this way and enjoy!

It's also pretty easy to root roses, so with patience and some initial investment you can create a bunch more plants. :)

Do some research on Knockout Roses. They are very easy to care of and are disease resistant.

Every single rose I've ever cared for has been eaten by deer.  Some so badly they were left completely leafless in summer.  If you live in a heavy deer area you will have to protect your roses.  This is actually advice I wish someone had given me much earlier in my endeavors.  Good luck!

A lot of people like the Explorer roses but they never worked for me. I had tons of luck with my rugosa though. It got massive and resisted pests when the other succumbed to them.
