How old were you when you bought your first home? - Page 5

I was 28 and my husband was 30. It was 7 years ago when lending rules were a bit more lax and we didn't need a down payment. With current lending rules we probably couldn't have bought when we did. Not sure when we would have bought in that case, probably around now at age 35.

I was 41 and DH was 55 when we bought our first place (a one bedroom, cooperative apartment).  That was about 8 years ago.  We had been married about 16 years when we bought.  We had lived in three different states and I think the thing that kept us from buying when we finally settled in NYC was the idea that we may not stay.  After a while, it looked like we would stay so we made the plunge.  In retrospect, it was a great decision at the time (rents here are now double what we pay in mortgage).  In fact, I wish we had bought even earlier.  Oh well, water under the bridge.  Cost of housing here is insane, but there are positive trade-offs, for us at least.

I bought my first house at age 28 with the help of my father (he gifted me the down payment). It was a teenie old house that was perfect for one person and her dogs :)

So funny...I started this thread over a year ago and had forgotten about it. I read the first post and I was thinking, "Hey! This gals life sounds JUST like mine" and then I realized it was me. It's funny how the thread got resurrected....LMAO.

How are you doing? Feeling better about not owning?

I was 23 and DH was 24. It's a duplex. We bought our second home at 30 and 31. My husband died last year, so I sold our second home and moved into half the duplex. It really helps me out financially and my tenant is a friend of my husband's. It works out well.

I'm 21, DH 22, and we are NO WHERE near owning a home lol. I'm hoping in the next 5-10 years, though. Maybe a year or two after I graduate college we will make a bigger effort in purchasing. But we're renting from family, and have to admit, it's pretty cushy lol.

Wow! I'm totally surprised that so many of the responses have been early-mid 20's. I just turned 26 and I feel soooo far away from owning my own home. And none of my friends seem close either. I'm actually terrified by the whole idea--both the commitment and the actual process. It makes me feel like such a bad adult--I have no idea how one even goes about buying a house! I've always thought that someone should publish a book on how to be an adult and include things like buying a home (and writing a will, which is another thing that apparently most adults have done....oops!)

Yes, definately feeling better. DH has a new job and we've been saving our butts off. I feel like we are so much closer to our goal than we were a year ago. Hopefully, we will start looking at places by next year. If things go as planned, we will buy when I'm 28 and DH is 30. It did make me feel better to see that there is really no "average age". It seems like the responses are all across the board.

That's good to know. I absolutely love being a homeowner but it is definitely better when you are fully ready!

I purchased my first house at 21. My dh was 22. We had been married for 2 years, we both worked fulltime and we had no debt and no kids. We're still living in the same house 8 years and 2 kids later.
