Convertible for bigger baby?

Thread Starter

DS2 is nearly two months old and I've been contemplating what convertible seat to purchase for him for months. I am surprised that he is at the top of the growth charts : 90% for weight, 95% for height. So he'll need a convertible sooner than later. He's currently in a Babytrend EZ Flexloc (22 lb weight limit).

DS1 is in a True Fit currently. I'm pretty happy with the TF. He is 2.5 years old, about 29.5 lbs and has plenty of space over his head - still RFing. I don't plan to FF him yet although my hubby wishes I would.

I drive a 06 Civic. We have been talking (and talking and talking) about getting a larger vehicle. We are considering a Mazda5 or a true minivan.

Since I am reasonably happy with my current TF, I would consider another one. The downside in my mind is that it comes with a 35 lb RFing limit while there are 40 and 45 lb seats out there. If I get another one, I would lean towards a Premiere. There is also the Recline model - anyone know if the harness adjuster is more easily accessed on that one?

I'm not really interested in a Complete Air. I have a Scenera as a back up and I don't like the chest clip - the same one as on the CA. I haven't looked too closely at the new Britax's since their prices tend to be high. I was thinking about the Graco MyRide but have heard the shell is a tad shorter than the TF - even though the RFing weight limit is higher.

I am tempted to get a Radian. I have thoughts of getting one and putting DS1 in it and DS2 into the TF until DS1 is ready to FF then switching their seats. I have read online that Radians actually install pretty well and upright in Civics. I also like that the sides are relatively low so little ones can see out more easily. DS1 went through a phase of being really fussy in his seat and I wonder if it was because he had a hard time looking out. Opinions on which model is the best?

ERF is important to me. Price is a consideration but once I decide I can start keeping an eye out for a good deal on the chosen seat. Suggestions?

For a 95% height baby, I'd only consider the complete air (which you don't want it sounds like), radian, or true fit.  Those are the tallest shells.  I think the radian is a great option.  DS1 can rf in it until he outgrows it (or until he is old enough you want him ffing) and then you can swap and have the option of rfing ds2 longer.
