ugg rusing to FF..

So my birth board (another site) Celebrates our LO first year this month so of course the Whos going FF thread is going around..

Now while I promote and support extended rear facing I know not everyone sees things my way. So if they at least meet the 12 months plus 20lbs thing then well okay.. However it irritates the heck outta me when they say things like the have eaither already turned or can't wait (waiting on the actual birthday) so they can watch car DVD players... REALLY? the DVD player trumphs over your kids spine? I just don't get that...

Maybe they find it easier to drive without having a screaming/babbling kid in the back and want them to quiet down, by watching a dvd?

I can kind of understand it. My baby will be RF until she exceeds the limits for her seat because safety comes first, but I am hanging out to turn her FF. Because she *sobs* in the carseat. Not all the time, not every trip. But when she does it breaks my heart (and is distracting). I think she will be heaps happier FF and, while we don't have any plans for a DVD player yet I would get one to stop the tears (and she is TV free!).

This is why we turned our oldest FFing at one.  Well, not to watch a DVD, we didn't have one in the car, but because seeing me made her stop screaming.  My dh worked all the time when she was little so if I didn't want to go crazy, she had to get in the car, which meant screaming cause she couldn't see me.

Now, both my boys have been chill in the car and ds1 stayed RFing until 2.5 when he figured out how to get out of his car seat straps no matter how tight it was (we call him Gumby for a reason!) and ds2 is RFing and will be for awhile.

Something to note: dd now gets carsick fairly easy at 6, so I think that played a part in why she was so unhappy.

My kiddo watches dvds RF.  I just put it on the head rest on the backseat and rigged the cord down so she can't grab it.  I don't see how watching movies could possibly be an excuse to go FF

This is such a hard thing for me, personally, although in the last few years I've seen TONS of progress towards the positive. And the AAP is releasing new car seat guidelines in April, I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed that they officially change the 1 and 20lb rule. I have BTDT, I turned my oldest on her first birthday (the day before, actually). I knew better but she was a car screamer, and 6 years ago, this message wasn't as prevalent (at least that's my excuse!). I didn't try hard, I just knew our daily commute of 40min to my nannying job was too much to handle with her screaming. In our van the DVD player is mounted, for forward facing kids, so my DD was watching movies when my DS could not. It wasn't an issue for him though, he didn't care much. It was for my MIL though, who kept asking when we would turn him so he could see the movie too. He stayed RFing to the max weight of his seat, 33lbs. I figure now with two big sibs to entertain her, seats that RF to 40+lbs, and a baby in the 35th percentile, DD2 will likely be able to rear-face till she's like 7! orngtongue.gif

I think they need to have dvd players that turn all the way around for rfing toddlers. My niece is a screamer in the car and while my sister has her rfing still I think being able to play toddler movies on the long drive to our parents house would help.

Why not have a big mirror so they can still see it RF? We don't have a DVD player but DS loves that he has a big mirror (the kind that straps to the back seat) so he can see me (and himself lol)... I'm sure if you angle it just right the screen could be in view.

DS screamed hysterically for his first ~10mos in the car seat and now he actually likes it! Bigger RF seat and the mirror seemed to make the difference...
