Warm clothes for baby

Ok, WHAT IS THE DEAL with no really warm clothes for babies?

I don't mean coats and going-outside-in-the-blizzard bunting things, just warmer-than-t-shirt things for around the house. My son has a couple of fleece sleepers, but I don't really like him wearing artificial fabrics all the time (and also, the sleepers are annoying for diaper changes, with the snaps up each leg). He has lots of onesies, but those are all t-shirt-weight jersey. He has some sweaters, which I love, but they're kind of a pain to wash (wash gentle, dry flat).

Also, I saw some Valentine's Day onesies at a store--and they were SHORT SLEEVED. WHY? I live in VA, it's cold on Valentine's Day here. Actually, Silas has a number of short-sleeved onesies, and exactly one cardigan.

I thought it would be good to get him some little sweatshirts. I searched high and low and finally found this one (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00460087U). When it came, though...it's not a sweatshirt. It's a slightly heavier jersey than a t-shirt, and at least it has long sleeves, but it's not a sweatshirt.

I was so frustrated, I thought about getting some sweatshirt material and just making some myself (I'm a pretty good seamstress), but then I started to wonder...is the dearth of warm clothing for babies a safety issue? I wouldn't want to endanger him, but...Does anyone know what gives? Am I just looking in all the wrong places?

Okay so here's what I've got, because I totally feel you. Daniel wears alot of fleece, especially at night because he doesn't sleep with blankets yet and seems to sleep better with them on. Yeah it's not ideal, but it is what it is. During the day, he wears one-pieces like this: http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=7142&vid=1&pid=785594&scid=785594002 which are made out of sweatshirt fabric. Gap even sells a velour one piece that is pretty cute that your baby could wear at night: http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=7142&vid=1&pid=805162. The Children's Place has really cute baby hoodies and sweatpants and my little guy wears them all the time: http://www.childrensplace.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/category_10001_10001_-1_133199__24651|133199_baby%20boy|activewear. They're also really affordable and you can find lots of coupons online. Gap makes jeans that are lined with soft gray jersey inside that are really cozy (they're also great for skinnier babies since they're the only ones that really fit my little guy lately). I hope that helps!

DD doesn't sleep well in fleece because she sweats so much in it! However, during the day we do put fleece hoodies and pants on her and she doesn't mind. We layer a lot. For nights when it's really cold we put her in organic wool pants and they are super toasty - http://www.nordicwoollens.com/

Do you have a local outdoor shop? I've gotten lots of warm things for DD at MEC here in Canada.

We dress DD is long-sleeved onsies with socks and a cotton sleeper (with feet) overnight. If we are home for the day I will leave her in that since it keeps her socks on. If we are going out she will wear a long-sleved onsie with fleece pants and hooded sweatshirt. I can't dress her in fleece overnight or she will turn into a sweaty-grumpy puddle!

We layered pants with baby legs a lot.  Warmer than just one layer and it didn't get in the way of diaper changes nearly as much.

We used to do a cotton zip onesie (t-shirt weight) with a heavy sweatshirt material onesie like the Gap one a PP linked. Now that DD has grown out of those things, we generally just layer light t-shirt material stuff under fleece.  We keep our house very very cool (oil is outrageously expensive in the Northeast) so keeping DD toasty is something we make sure of every day. Fleece is not a natural fiber, but it works really well, it is easy to maintain, and it doesn't irritate her skin at all.  It is also affordable and easy to find.  My jaw dropped when I saw a PP link to an $87 onesie.  I don't know about you mamas, but I sure can't afford that.

I second the need for layering with wool. I got my layering pieces from Hessnatur because they are less expensive than Nordic Naturals. Plus they have sales.

Anyway wool layers well under everything, and then babylegs too if you like. Got us through the spell when our heat was out and our house was cold.gif.

Thanks for the links everyone! Little guy will definitely get some wool leggings for next winter. I can't believe I forgot to check the Children's Place--I love their stuff!

I really appreciate the help. I was just getting SO FRUSTRATED trying to keep him warm enough.

Now is a good time to keep your eyes open for warm stuff on clearance so you can stock up for next year.
