Experience with birthing at Overland Park Regional Medical Center

I am due in 5 weeks, just wondering how the atmosphere is at Overland Park regional, I couldn't find much info on the website...My papers from my preadmittance appt. say to have your baby brought to the nursery if you are sleeping?!? That kind of goes against the idea of rooming in, I plan to talk to my Midwife about it on thursday, but wondering if anyone had experience with this hospital and how they accomodate more crunchy mamas.

THANKS

I almost feel like I can't comment on this since I was a labor & delivery nurse at OPR. As a nurse there I tried my best to make everyone's birth experience what they wanted! If the mama wanted something as close to a homebirth with the least amt of interventions possible then I tried to do that. I can't really speak for the mother/baby side of things because I didn't work there but you definitely room in with your baby. There are some parents that prefer if they are both sleeping that baby goes to the nursery. I'm not sure if the nurses/err..whoever advocate for that...that if both are asleep baby goes to nursery?? I don't think so. I had my baby there and except for the time following birth when she was in the nursery to be assessed I don't think she left our room.

I myself lean towards crunchy mama too and am looking for a midwife. My husband and I are TTC #2 and while I don't plan to do a homebirth I'd like a more crunchy midwife..def want a different birth experience than I had last time. I came here to try to find my own local natural scene as most of what I read/respond to is all internet based community but none of that with actual local people!! That being said, do you mind if I ask who your midwife is and what your experience has been like? I will be a VBAC and find that many providers I've worked with do NOT do VBACs. Hope you're feeling good during these last weeks!!!

I have never had a baby there but I had a friend who did. If we were having to go to the hospital this go around we would choose this hospital- simply because of the friendly atmosphere they seemed to exhibit towards family member's and the way they treated my friend and her babe after delivery. I heard from my midwife that Olathe was way more " crunchy" but then when I went in for spotting and preterm labor they were very rough and rude to my hubby and kids- and definitely not as crunchy as I had hoped . Overland Park seemed way better imo.

oh thanks for the info ladies! I did talk to my mw about the rooming in and she acted like that rooming in was standard, maybe the paper is just old or they state that for safety reasons! aimee-I see sarah darby at The women's healthcare group, I have no complaints, she is a great provider. I am not sure about her delivering vbacs as I had a vaginal birth with my ds so that question has never come up. There are 3 cnm's at the practice under Dr . estrin, I have only met one of the ob's and it was dr. stone but she was nice as well, just had to meet with her at one appt. to make sure all is well and there were no complications for a mw delivery. I have met one other midwife, but I prefer cnm darby, and I will meet with the 3rd midwife in a couple weeks if i don't meet her before at the hospital, lol! I would say try them out, I went to "for women only" prior to this practice and I didn't really like it. The office is tiny and crowded and I went in when i was having a miscarriage and they pretty much treated me like I was not pregnant because the urine test came up negative, never asked if i was trying or seemed to care, the women's healthcare group the staff is all friendly, I was able to get an appt. with a midwife within a week even being a new patient and they treated me much better than the other practice, and the office is amazing, very big, well the whole 4th floor and I am able to get in to my appts right after i leave the urine sample so i don't have to wait long at all.

Good luck!

Hmm... I thought I had replied to this... anyway...

I've had two babies at OPR and have had both of my kids room in and cosleep the whole time.  The only time they ask that they take the baby is if you are in the room alone (no dh or visitors) and you want to take a shower.  They just don't want the baby unattended.  Other than that, the staff is great.  They never gave me any problems for denying their tests or refusing their shots.  If I have to go to a hospital next time, I will go back to OPR.
