Spot on Back of Head Where Hair Wears Off

Julia (11.5 weeks) has a little spot on the back of her head (about a 1 inch diameter area) where her hair kind of wears off. Not quite sure how to explain it...it isn't a bald spot. I guess it's like the hairs are breaking off and leaving what's almost like peach fuzz. I can see some of the hairs on her changing table where her head lays. I've noticed this since she has been squirming around and moving her head back and forth more. Her head isn't flat or anything in that spot. Is this normal?

Yup.  Normal.

I sometimes find it helps to wash the baby's hair a little more often - hair is more likely to break off when it's coated in sticky stuff and *then* rubbed against surfaces - but babies spit up so very often and hate having wet heads so very much.

My LO had a bald spot, or bald spot remnants until she was 7 months!

Totally normal. Cecilia didn't have any at first, because she was always on one of her sides or upright in my arms or the wrap for the first few months of her life. But then around 4-5 months she began sleeping in the swing, and that's when she got a sparse spot (never bald, just sparse). She stopped sleeping in the swing around 8 months, and now sleeps on her tummy mostly, and it's filling back in. smile.gif

My LO still has a bit of a bald spot at 6 months.

Totally normal. Daniel has tons of hair, but he had about a 3 inch spot totally missing for a while because he slept on his back and would turn his head in his sleep. Once he started rolling over and sleeping in multiple positions (~5m) the hair totally grew in. Babies spend a lot of time with that kind of pressure on that one spot (in their carseat, in the swing, on their back when they sleep...) it's no wonder they get the bald spot.

I almost wonder if part of the "bald spot" might be from the baby's head growing. This is totally my opinion, but I was wondering looking at DS's head, how it grows. I mean he had so much hair at birth, now it looks like male pattern balding. But I think it's just from his head getting bigger. He's also kinda got this balding band all around the back of his head, but I wonder if it's more from growing than rubbing off. The hair doesn't appear broken, just thinner all along the band. Anyway, I don't know if anyone actually has info on how baby's heads grow but I was wondering about this as I look at my DS's ever growing bald spot.

Now that you mention it, I can see a band if I look closely, that goes around her head at a bit above ear level that has less hair than the rest of her head. The hair isn't broken off like the spot on the back of her head, but there definitely isn't as much hair filling it in as the rest of her head.

For my DS, we called it "Baby-Pattern Baldness!"

My DD was bald all over, so she didn't have any particular spots to be concerned about.
