potty awareness help! AF related

Thread Starter

We've been focusing on potty awareness with my ds (25mo) and so we talk about what we're doing on the potty and generally try to give him the language and give him exposure to DH and I using the potty. Since I'm a SAHM he's been really into coming to the potty with me and looking and saying 'ooooh, mommy pee pee', etc..

So now, AF is here and I need help with how to handle it. DS has already called my pad 'mommy's diaper' once blush.gif

I need something to call AF - period is fine, but I do worry that he would call all blood 'period' for a while (he's very much in that identifying, literal, super talkative phase and I could seem him doing that).

So for your toddlers that watch you potty, what do you do when AF is in town? what words do you use for your pad/cup/tampon and your period?

I just tell ds its my period, my pad, or whatever.  He's said enough embarrassing things, that I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be the worst!

As far as potty awareness goes, we're right there with you.  DS knows when he's going, and announces it for all the world to hear (in the store in line he goes, "I'm just peeing" ROTFLMAO.gif).  His dad also lets him see whats going on when he's with his dad, and while watching his dad pee one time, ds asked, "daddy, what are you doing?"  Dad says, "I'm taking a leak" and DS responds with, "I see it, I see the leak!" biglaugh.gif

Have fun!  Potty mouths are really fun.

Oh goodness, when I've got a pad on DD says, "mommy pooped?  Pooped in pants??" It's hilarious. But no, I tell her it's my period, that mommy needs a special pad/cup/tampon for a few days to keep her panties clean.

We emphasize clean panties or clean undies.  I try to take the focus off what it actually is and make it a cleanliness issue.

HTH!

it is no big deal here, my 21 month old likes to hand me pads out of the drawer. LOL.

My DD calls my pads my "diapers" too. :D  Somehow she picked up the word "menstruation" from somewhere - the kid is just a language SPONGE - and that's what she calls it!  The other day she pooped in the potty and told me there was "poo, pee and blood" in the potty, which of course I was totally alarmed by.  I looked and there was no blood at all - but then she informed me it was "menstruation". 0_0  I guess this is a healthy attitude towards her future bodily functions!

Anyway, yah, I'm on side with just being totally frank about it, treating it like it's no big deal and letting them normalize it.

Since my two year old LOVES to follow me into the bathroom, no matter what time of the month it is, I call my tampons "mommys Bandaid".  Seems to be working so far.

That's cute!  I feel like my DD would say something like that too!  They seriously pick up on everything you say!!
