I need to take Nyquil

I have acute asthmatic bronchitis.  I have an albuteral inhaler, mucinex, and cough syrup with codein (that doesn't really help).  This is the 3rd week I've been sick and I now have general soreness in my entire torso, a bruised rib, and an area in my lower back that is hurting pretty bad - all from coughing long, hard, and constantly.  I can barely swallow sometimes because my throat hurts from coughing.  This is a sickness I get every couple of years and in the past I've dosed with Nyquil and Dayquil.  Nothing else I have is calming the cough and allowing me any  sleep, and I can't get better unless I get some sleep.  For the record, the Nyquil doesn't give me that 'dead to the world' sleep when I'm sick like this.  I cosleep and EBF on demand.  This is what Dr. Hale says about Nyquil:

Nyquil is potentially sedating to a breastfed infant. In a newborn, or in one who is subject to apnea, I would not use it at all.
In older, stable, mature infants, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
But avoid pseudoephedrine, and avoid these in moms who have a poor milk supply, as they may potentially suppress milk to some degree.
I don't aparticularly like these agents as they could potentially cause problems in some infants, and they really don't help the mother much at all.

DS is over 7 months old.  What is an "older stable mature infant"?  I'm open to trying something else, but Nyquil is the only thing I've ever tried that works.  I don't know why.  I even tried 1 evening having a hot toddy (whiskey) with the equivilent amounts of tylenol and mucinex, so the only thing missing was the antihistamine, and it still didn't work.

I took less than a full dose last night and it really did help.  I'm making sure to drink lots of fluids and hoping it doesn't hurt my oversupply too much.  Any advice or opinions?  Just waiting it out isn't gonna work on this one.

The antihistamine in nyquil is, I believe, the same as benadryl.

I would go ahead and take it. There is, I believe, still a decongestant in Dayquil, though, so I wouldn't take that one. I'm pretty sure a healthy 7 mo. meets the criteria of a stable, mature infant, as I believe he was speaking in contrast to a newborn.

Not sure if you've tried this, but with a cold/lingering cough this winter, I tried a new (to me) product called Chestal.  http://www.amazon.com/Boiron-Chestal-Honey-8-45-liquid/dp/B00112TIC2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1300383900&sr=8-1

It's a homeopathic cough remedy, and it worked well for me.  I don't like to take Benadryl (my non-nursing go to drug), because it caused some supply issues with my first baby.  This is the next best thing for me.

Thanks mamas!  Do you think it's the antihistamine that I need?  (no, not going to take it, just curious).  Not going to take Dayquil either, I'll just suffer during the day.  I just need to get some sleep!  I've been working from home a lot which helps, though it's driving me crazy to see what a disaster my house has become!

I'll look into Chestal, thanks!

i rarely take meds, but sudafed is something i haven't given up.

i guess our bodies all have their weakness, and mine is sinus gunk, that turns to chest issues if i don't dry it up.

i use the children's liquid sudafed so i can can take a very small does, like infant dose  (dr sears has a dosing chart for infants/children). works enough to get relief and try to drink enough to keep my milk going.

When was the last time you saw the doc? are you sure it's not pneumonia? It sounds pretty bad.

I wouldn't worry about the nyquil as long as your sleeping situation is safe! Feel better!

Thanks all.  Yep, just bad bronchitis.  I'm finally getting over it now.  The cough will last a couple more weeks.  For the record, the Nyquil helped tremendously.  I took less than the full dose at night and made sure to drink plenty of water.  I didn't see any hit to my production above what I would normally see if I didn't drink enough water the previous day, but I had an abundant supply to begin with.
