I can't believe what MY doctor said to me today!

My (not the baby's) doctor is a DO family practice doc who specializes in alternative and complementary medicine.  He was stoked and supportive of my homebirth.  I have been battling a nasty cold/sinus infection/yellow snot coming out of everywhere thing so I made an appointment today.  I felt so comfortable knowing I could count on him to prescribe something that would work for a breastfeeding, cosleeping mother.

We started to talk options and he asked me how much night nursing I was doing, and did I think I could handle something that would really knock me out (he knows I BF but did not know about the cosleeping yet).  I told him I didn't think that would work as my son wakes every 90 minutes or so.  And he said, "Have you tried just letting him scream?"

And from there he kept promoting it, referred to it as "a survival skill he'll have for the rest of his life."  He's the last person on the list I would have expected a CIO lecture from.  I felt ambushed!  It was awful.  I'm always waiting for this from the ped (hasn't happened yet, god love her), I never thought MY doctor would be telling me to CIO!

Oh littlebirdy! How awful! Well, at least it wasn't the ped I guess. Did you argue or nod and ignore?

Oh and I've got acute asthmatic bronchitis so I'm right there with ya!

I've been really surprised to learn that pretty much everyone I have ever known uses CIO.  My dad talks about how my brother and I were so textbook, we cried half an hour the first night, fifteen minutes the next, and five the third.  Apparently we were perfect little angels after that. My mother remembers it quite differently.  Either way, I am not doing that and everyone just seems so shocked.  It's a lot worse coming from people you trust though.

It's suprising how many people seems to advocate "just let him cry".  =(

Thanks.  I was so blown away I just sort of sidestepped it.  Bronchitis, yuck!  How to you keep from coughing at night & waking the baby up?  My poor guy was awake at 5:30 this morning because I had a coughing fit.
