help! Virus? Parasite? Toddler now only sick during evening, distended tummy?!

Our son got some sort of virus around 2 weeks ago, started with vomiting then a day later yellow stinky poo. He was very lethargic and ran a low grade fever. Whole thinkg lasted around 6 days, kept him hydrated, took him to ped., got better.

Then, this, week, he began vomiting again, had some constipation, the occassional stinky, sticky poo. His tummy looks bloated. Strange thing is, he was fine all day yesterday, then felt ill during dinner. Today, seemed to get better, then around 7, all downhill. He is very clingy when he doesn't feel well, and that's how he is now. This is maybe the third day of fine day and sick evening/night. Last night, he ran a fever, around 101, at one point, briefly, 104. Called the nurse line, since he is walking upright, doesn't sound like appendicitis. We would take him to dr. but he feels ok during the day, and seems to be getting better.

What does this sound like? Any relief suggestions welcome. We have misc. tea, essential oils, homeopathic remedies...

Will take him to chiropractor for some muscle testing as soon as she becomes available. But for now??

The first time DD got the rota virus she was that age and it lasted a good 4 weeks, with the vomiting stopping after about 10 days but the diarrhea lasting much longer. The vomitting stopped when I removed all dairy from her diet (the rota virus causes a temporary intolerance to dairy) including yogurt. I made the mistake of thinking giving her yogurt would help rebuild the gut when it actually made things worse.

This virus lasts pretty long the first time they get it. What you have described sounds normal. Next time he gets it, it won't be nearly so bad. Hang in there.

Thanks, I assumed the original virus was rota due to the yellow smelly poo from what was described in other threads. I thought maybe we were lucky after that first spell. But what you are saying REALLY helps, I had read it could last a while, and I didn't realize it could last THAT long.

But, by DH felt better when I told him I thought it could be three weeks, that maybe this wasn't just a new virus. We didn't have him tested to confirm what it was though. Going to the doctor, when we rarely do, this last bout was the second time he has been, make us crazy. Long waits, expensive labs, makes us start thinking all paranoid.

We started giving him some colloidal silver, incase there was a UTI. We are giving him some probiotics, BUT he wants it in MILK! I have suspected that he may be intolerant, and I don't know how to refuse his requests for cheese and milk, which he loves. So I guess kefir and yogurt is out, too. Maybe I will see if he doesn't like goat milk.

He is still BF, but he vomited that up last night out of the blue. I thought we were out of vomiting.

Temperament is better, we did postpone his Birthday Party (2) today to next week, although sounds like we may not be out of the woods by then.

i really appreciate your reply! We needed some assurance that what he has wasn't totally unusual!

If you have any ideas for how we can steer him from dairy, (he is loving cheese and little glasses of whole milk right now), Please let me know!

When my DD2 got rotavirus as a toddler, it lasted a good month. DS had it last fall, and I can't remember how long it was (I pay less attention the more children there are shy.gif), I think it was over 3 weeks though.

Thanks, Peony. We definitely feel better knowing its just a long virus, and not DS getting sick again. He is at least in better spirits now!
