Finger Foods

Thread Starter

My 1 year old girls ove feeding themselves with finger foods.  I feel we do great on fruits, grains and dairy.

We do get in some meats but those are most frozen, prepared items (organic, as low in salt as I can find them) -- mostly chicken and wild caught salmon.  I would love to do more home-made for them, but its not terribly realistic with our lifestyle.

I do feel like I am really struggling with getting the veg in with finger foods.  We frequently do steamed peas/peas and carrots/peas, carrot and corn.  They also love Dr. Praeger's veggie burgers.

Anyone elase have great idea for other finger food veggies that their kids like and are able to manage without choking (another concern)?

Brocolli and cauliflower are good, either steamed or roasted. Cut into florets, they can hold the stem. Any vege you can cut into fingers - potato/sweet potato/pumpkin - roasted. Zucchini lightly steamed or sauted. Green beans, topped and tailed.

My LO also loves cucumber, cut in either a stick or a diagonal slice, and cherry tomatoes cut in half.

I think they're the main ones we do. J is only 10 months old and she can't really pick up small food like peas or corn yet. Although whole baby corn would work.

With little success (but we will keep trying), we have done edemame (soybeans).  You boil the pod whole, then pop out the beans.  They are so healthy that I am really hoping our almost 1 y.o. will take to them.  Thanks for the idea about veggie burgers.  I knew a woman whose 18 m.o. would demolish a half block of firm tofu...but then we heard about the tofu/estrogen thing, so we are hesitant to follow in her footsteps.  I think cheese is also a good finger food, but you'd have to cut it pretty small and keep a close eye out for choking.  Good luck!
