Low Carb anyone?

Hubby and I are trying to lose weight and he's inspired me to try to cut way down on the carbs. Myself I have a wicked sweet tooth and fighting the cravings is hard, so hoping to have the advantage of dealing with that, too.

Problem with searching for low-carb recipe ideas on the web is the preponderance of processed foods in the recipes. I see "low carb pancakes" and I'm like woo-hoo! Then I see the ingredients are some kind of low-carb pancake mix one buys from a store, and some weird fake maple syrup, and I'm like Yuck! So I'm hoping here at good 'ol MDC I can find some folks who share our love of seasonal, local food but who are also wishing to experiment with cutting way down on the carbs.

Fortunately we raised our own pigs last summer so have lots of pork. Tonight I'm making pork ribs in the oven and will serve with a huge portion of broccoli slaw. The ribs recipe does have honey and brown sugar, but I figure without our usual heaping servings of rice or pasta this will still be a big improvement.

I'm going to have to revamp a lot of my standard meal plan recipes so am looking for great ideas for meals.

You'll get much more response in the Traditional Foods forum--a lot of the mamas there are following a "paleo" or "primal" plan. I like the website Mark's Daily Apple.

I remember seeing some low carb dieting threads in the weight loss forum. In TF we tend to not embrace the concept of dieting.

As far as recipes and support, there are 2 groups in the nutrition section here that may be helpful to you, the sugar addiction/sgar free group and the paleo/primal group. Neither is strictly LC, but they all have a lot of overlap.

As far as finding recipes right now though, i never recommend looking for substitute recipes until after detox is over (2-3 weeks of strict clean eating for most people). For now, concentrate on meat and veg. Make a list of your favorite meals (list of mains, list of sides, list of snacks) that are naturally LC and keep it on hand (bacon & eggs, roast chicken, steak, corned beef and cabbage, sauteed broccoli, roasted broccoli, stir fried broccoli, deviled eggs, celery & pb, etc. ). A list of what you can have is much easier to use than a list of what you can't, so be as thorough as possible.

As you discovered, LC has become a money maker for many food companies, which was very much not the intention behind it. If you can get a copy of Atkins from the early 90s or before, you'll see the original recommendations were for whole foods, it is actually very similar to Paleo, only with dairy. Avoid the faux foods and substitutes whenever possible, since they often just feed the cravings.

Thanks, everyone. I'm not looking for a "diet", just some changes in our eating habits, so I'm off to peruse the other threads/forum. Thanks!
