My husbands heartrate...

Thread Starter

for 2 days in a row was about 120. It wasn't weak, it was pounding. Even when he just woke up in the morning it was like 112. Today it's back down to his normal 65....

He also had a cold these days but I don't know if that's related. He's gotten colds before and never noticed his heartrate go up. He had a slight fever of 99.5.

He's got a doc appt tuesday but it's bugging me a little. Wondering what it could have been. I worry about heart conditions... but he's a healthy weight, eats well, his work is physical... What would cause his heart to race like that for 2 days straight and then just be gone?

I don't know, but my son started having what looked like heart-related symptoms during his last virus, and a little bit since then, so your post interests me. We took him to the doc and he did a chest xray and bloodwork, all of which came back normal, but he's still sending us to the cardiologist just in case. In his case, his hands and feet were turning blue whenever he stood up, but then were normal if he laid down.

That's very strange. Is he ok now? My Dh isn't having the hand symptoms but I do agree that it could be virus - related. Dh is in good health. I'm just suprised anythign could hit him like this.

If he experiences that kind of fast heart rate for a long period of time, I would take him to the doc or emergency room.

My heart rate increases when I have a cold, usually at the beginning of the cold. I think the adrenals mobilize the immune system and that causes that feeling of hyperness and increased heart rate. But I don't think I have ever had it for two solid days (although its possible that I have and just didn't notice it).

I can also get increased heartrate from taking antihistamines. Did your DH take anything for his cold?

It's called tachycardia-anything above 100 and he should be seen by an md cause it can be a dangerous condition.

Even though the fever was low-grade, it is very likely that the fever caused the tachycardia, especially if it's gone now.  My heart rate elevates each & every time I run a temperature.  The higher my temp, the higher my heart rate goes.  Mine will go even higher if the illness dehydrates me to some extent.   Hope that helps!

Sophie yes I've read that. But I guess I figured tachycardia is still usually a symptom of something bigger, know what I mean?

Bellingham I don't think he did. Actually he took tylenol. And possibly another pain med. I'll ask him about that. Maybe he combined somethign he shouldn't have!

Sophie's. Will do. Thanks. :)

Tachycardia is considered a heart arythmia if it lasts longer that a little while. If he has'nt done anything or taken any med to cause it, it should be investigated.

tachyardia can be caused by dehydration/fever/virus anythiing. in a normal person with a normal heart it is not harmful but for those with heart conditions it is. i have tachyardia but i have congestive heart failure so its not good for me. i would tell him to go to the ER with tachyardia. i do not play with heart issues anymore. better safe than sorry.

Thanks guys. He has a doc appt today so hopefully we'll get answers. Another weird symptom taht came up the last few days is his fore arm seems to have a swelling about 2 inches long by an inch wide or so. Extremely painful to touch, not painful to move his hand or arm. No discolouration. I thought maybe blood clot but it doesn't pit when you press on it.

He has a disease called neurofibromatosis. It might be the cause of both things... Who knows.

Oh and he hasn't had trama to the area.

Does he snore at night? Or wake up feeling faint, have a headache, or just is overall really tired? Sleep apnea is more common than people think, so make sure to mention any of these symptoms to the doctor when you see him or her. One of the symptoms is fast heart-rate upon waking from one of these apnea episodes.

It may be nothing at all, but worth a trip to find out for sure, right?

No he doesn't snore. But he does do these weird grunts just as he's drifting off. Some people told me that could be sleep apnea.

We went to the doc yesterday and he was saying things like "panic attack" and worried about heart attack. He refered him to a diff doctor (who is no more a specialist than he is,   he just wanted DH out of his hair...) ugh. So we're going to him today and hopefully HE'LL refer him to the specialist.

Tiny update. We went to this new doctor and he was GREAT. He listened to everything, asked a lot of questions... decided that Dh should have an entire checkup, full bloodwork, etc. So he's got the Req for that. Then today dh came down with either stomach flu or had too much milk (lactose intolerant) so he's laid up in bed. But we will definitely be getting some answers soon.

Just an update on us in case it's applicable to you. We took ds to the cardiologist -- he had a slightly abnormal EKG and an absolutely normal echocardiogram, and they said his heart looked great. Their best guess about what happened is that he was so run down from all the repeated illness he'd had (two viruses, a bad lingering cough, and the stomach flu) that his autonomic nervous system started acting funky, imitating heart symptoms. The autonomic nervous system is what makes you faint, and can control blood pressure and blood circulation. When people are stressed by illness, it can sometimes not function normally, and can create things like cyanosis.

I don't know if that applies to your situation or not. So glad your'e getting it checked out.

That does sound like what DH had. He had a cold with a slight fever at teh time, was super stressed about some drama with our friends, and had been drinking a lot of coffee and used to smoke. (Quit 3 months ago.) Doc said those things could combine to cause weird heartrates and stuff.  It'll be good to find out for sure. :) Glad your DS is ok.

Small update. We went to the ER the other night. Dh had a slightly elevated heartrate of 100, and this time got red blotches all over his chest. The ER docs chalked it up to an allergy.

Well we got home and determined the cause of the blotches. Cheap alcohol. It was even affecting my skin a bit. But the heartrate thing was definitely not caused by alcohol because he wasn't drinking 2 weeks ago when he had it for 2 days. And it wasn't stress because this time we weren't stressed at all. Relaxing, watching tv.

Just waiting on blood test results / xray ect, and then he'll have an actual physical...
