For those of you in NYC, you can actually see the exhibit at the NY Hall of Science through April.  It will be in LA in May and in DC in 2012.

This is a short film (13 minutes) starring Sir Ben Kinglsey that has won numerous awards http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZDe9DCx7Wk

You can see all the awards here http://www.1001inventions.com/media/video/library  as well as learn more.

A big problem is that many of the Arab names were "Westernized" so many Americans have no idea of the history/contributions of so many Arabs and Muslims.  Arabic was the language that educated people spoke and wrote in during what in the West was the "Dark Ages".  Al-Zahrawi became Abulcasis. Al-Razi, credited with numerous firsts and the author of a medical textbook which was used for centuries in the Muslim and Western world. became Rhazes.  Musa ibn Maimon, aka, Moses ben Maimon, the great Jewish philosopher and physician who wrote in Arabic and Hebrew, became Maimonides.
