Tokyo tap water not safe for infants

Levels of radioactive iodine found to be about double the safe levels for children under age of 1. Black smoke billows from a reactor at the stricken Japanese nuclear plant.

Water tests in Tokyo found levels of radioactive iodine 131 at 210 becquerels per liter Tuesday and 190 becquerels per liter on Wednesday morning, about double the level of 100 becquerels per liter deemed safe for children under the age of 1. A level of 300 becquerels per liter is considered safe for adults.

When I saw that I wondered how contaminated bmilk is there.  Because that is where a lot of infants get their water--- formula.

Do you know anything about the longevity of this type of radition (can the water be "fixed", will it always be contaminated...).

Theoretically speaking, if there is no additional I-131 being introduced into the water supply, it should drop below 100 becquerels in a little more than 8 days. That is if my memory of an 8.019 half-life is accurate.

I was thinking about the safety of breast milk too, I have no idea.

I read that today too. I feel so terrible for everyone who lives near there -- I was sad and scared from way across the Pacific, I can't even imagine how they must feel.

ITA.  I hope the goverment is being able to provide alternative water sources for *at least* the smallest/weakest people.
