"Chapter" Book Suggestions?

We've started reading Chapter books to my 5.5 y/o dd before bed. So far we've done Mouse & the Motorcycle, Ramona Quimby Age 8, Ramona the Pest, and the Best Christmas Pageant Ever.  My next choice was Charlotte's Web but for some reason it's not available on my Kindle. Suggestions? I'm just going from my own childhood reading list, and I'm sure there have been other great kids' chapter books released since then, right?

Betsy-Tacy (but be aware that a baby dies in one chapter)

And just about anything by Astrid Lindgren. (Pippi Longstocking, The Children on Troublemaker Street, The Children of Noisy Village, or Emil in the Soup Tureen - and sequels of those - should be fine for just about any 5 year old.  Ronia the Robber's Daughter, Mio My Son, or The Brothers Lionheart are good but might not be appropriate for all kids that age.)

I love this topic!  We love many of the books above, but I think the following are a good for your daughter's age.

We loved the My Father's Dragon trilogy by Ruth Stiles Gannett

We love Raold Dahl (see James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory above) but I would suggest starting with the Fantastic Mr. Fox and then if your daughter can handle just a bit of scariness, read the  BFG.  I didn't need to edit these like I did James..

My kids loved the Magic Tree House (Mary Pope Osborne) and the Rainbow Fairies (Daisy Meadows) series, but I don't so much.

My almost 7 year old daughter currently LOVES the Sisters Grimm series and I really enjoy reading it with her.  

I've tried Finn Family Moomintroll several times now, but it just seems a bit too weird for us.  We can't seem to get past the first 20 or so pages.

We just finished a bunch of Ramona books ourselves and loved them.

ETA  Catwings series by Ursula K. Le Guin is also great (and her adult novel The Left Hand of Darkness is one of my favorites)

My 5 year old LOVES chapter books..  I love getting new ideas!  Little House series is great.  We just finished Tumtum and Nutmeg (the book with 3 books within it).  She loved it.  We also like the Tiptoes Lightly series.

Island of the Dolphins -- there may be something about sex/coming of age in this (I can't quite remember), but I read it as a young reader and loved it

I loved Jack London and Madeline L'Engle as a young reader.

Oh yeah, and Judy Blume -- Blubber is the most memorable for me

How to Eat Fried Worms was a fun read too

Oh, and The Boxcar Children and Encyclopedia Brown series

There was a book about a donut machine or something?  I'll have to try to remember that one.

My kids just finished a series of books on a classroom hamster named Humprhey by Betty Birney. The first book is The World According to Humphrey. They're really sweet and kind of funny (Humphrey says things like "On the other paw.." which tickled dd's fancy.) There are six in the series.

The Clementine books by Sarah Pennypacker are good too.

The book about the donut machine is Homer Price by Robert McCloskey who wrote Make Way for Ducklings.  It's a great book.

Another one we loved was paddle to the sea by Holling Clancy Holling.

There are a lot of great books on this list, many of which my kids love, but I wanted to mention a few newer series that they've also loved. Some of these (*cough* Magic Tree House *cough*) are not especially well-written, but the stories are engaging and enjoyable, and I'm willing to forgive them a little sloppy grammar.

- Roscoe Riley series (About a little first-grade boy who can't stay out of trouble, no matter how hard he tries.)

- Magic Treehouse series (A not-too-scary mystery/adventure series, with stories that take the children through time and around the world.)

- Magic Schoolbus chapter book series (A science-based series my kids love. Be aware that there are short Magic Schoolbus picture books and Magic Schoolbus chapter books.)
