Breastfeeding 15mo loves 2% milk?

Okay. So, several things. 1) My 15mo DD is still nursing. We are trying to get to 2. However, 2) I'm pregnant with #2, so we'll see how nursing during pregnancy goes. So far, so good. I'm 14 wks today.

This may not be a bad thing, but it feels terrible to me. DD freaking LOVES 2% milk. I mean, she doesn't have it all the time. Heck, I don't drink it all the time. Maybe once a week. But whenever I have some, she always wants some. It started out with me giving her a sip like a month ago. Well, she wanted more. And tonight, she practically guzzled half my cup.

So, am I a bad mom for letting her drink 2% cow's milk? :(

Sigh.

It's just sad to me that she may be beginning to "move on" from my milk.

Opinions? Thoughts?

If she has any milk, it needs to be whole milk. They need full fat at that age.

My ds has been drinking whole cow milk since he was 12mo.  He weaned himself practically on his 2nd birthday.  Don't worry about it.  But I agree, whole is better for her than 2% b/c the fat is so important at this age.

I would also give whole milk.  And she can totally have cow milk and your milk. My daughter has been drinking cow's milk since 11 months and she's 12.5 months now.  She still nurses just as frequently.

I don't think it's a big deal for her to drink 2% milk on addition to breastfeeding. However, if your supply starts to dip and she's getting more and more nutrition from milk, it shoudl be either whole milk, or you should be sure that she has plenty of other fat in her diet.

Thank you all. :)

I did know that whole milk was better. I think with my hormones all wacky right now I was just freaking out about whether this was going to be the beginning of her weaning or not. Thanks for letting me know I have nothing to worry about in that department. :)

I thought the whole milk things was ultimately deemed unimportant? I thought the AAP revised their recommendations.

either way I don't think it's a big deal. I don't think it's a great idea for a toddler to drink a ton of any kind of milk (which included stopping my son from having breastmilk as 90% of his diet at that age lol). . But anything in moderation is fine, IMO

I've also heard whole milk at that age. Personally though, we only drink whole milk. Look into the process and chemicals used to reduce the fat in milk. Bleh.

I'm going to second the opinion that 2% milk is fine fat-wise unless your supply dips or you notice your supply change (for most women, it turns into colostrum during some point in their pregnancy). The reasoning is that as you nurse a child, the content of the milk changes with time depending on what they need. For full-term nursers, the fat content is very high. I'm guessing that the fat content in colostrum is not as high, and therefore your child would need to get it elsewhere.

I don't think it's a big deal. We're not an anti-dairy family by any means, and we started giving both boys whole milk at 12 months. With DS2, I desperately needed the break from nursing that whole milk offered, otherwise he was latched on practically 24/7.

you made me curious so I googled and found nothing about chemicals.

I believe it was somewhere in one of the Michael Pollen books. Sorry I can't be more specific. I just honestly don't remember.
