pardon my french but i truly think this is a fallacy. i dont think it really sets the precedent. at least not by reading. there is already a lot of boring tasks one has to do everyday.

that is why i dont insist on reading. but dd knows the boring stuff she HAS to do - like the dishes, sweeping and other chores at home. however she does have other 'boring for her' stuff that she has to do at school that she does do.

i refuse to spoil her reading that she enjoys sooo much (even in 3rd grade she has decodable books that are a joke, though i think she has to read them only 3 times). she does them once if at all.

I hated the Sam and Bob books and my dd did too.  She actually started really enjoying reading when I homeschooled her last year and just let her choose what to read, she had loved it before but the school program really kills the love of reading IME.  She read the Fox books a lot (Fox in Love, Fox on Stage, etc...) and just jumped into reading.  I did require her to read a book daily, but I gave her a lot of choice in her decision and didn't limit it to the ridiculous readers.  I also got a season of Between the Lions from the library and let her watch it to her hearts content because it seemed to help her remember to sound out words and to love reading again.  She is in a new school this year and her teacher really knows how to encourage a love of reading so we haven't run into the same problems this year.  If your child is bored then I think you should find other books for him to read.
