The situation with our carpets is that they are a little smelly and probably *very* dirty down deep. Dh doesn't know if he's going to rip them out, and steam cleaning is not an option right now for a bunch of reasons.

I would like to do *something before I start bringing more furniture in, and have wondered about the dry cleaning powders. I don't like the thought of the chemicals, but I also don't like the thought of my kids walking all over ciggarette grime and who knows what else.

Is there a natural dry cleaner that I can use? I've already done baking soda, which helped the smell, but I'm not sure about the cleaning power in this situation. Is there one dry cleaner that would be less bad than others, something that I can find on the shelves locally?
