My 2 y/o DD was exposed to pinkeye from her little pal at a playdate 3 days ago. The other little girl developed pink eye the following day. So of course DD got it last night. Her one eye was glued together by matting of lots of purulent green discharge this morning and the eye is very pink and the lid swollen. I tried to get BM in it to start with last night but proved almost impossible with a screaming wiggly toddler to squirt or drop it in. In the morning it looked so much worse (all the pus) that I called her pediatrician who didn't even need to see her, she called in a prescription for antibiotic eye drops (called Ciproflaxin).
Â
I'm very holistic and have never given DD any antis before but since this is pretty topical (eye drop) and she has just such a pus filled eye, I didn't want to take any chances. I hope it gets rid of it soon. I;m also giving her probiotics and have doubled her vitamin D.
Â
So the main reason I am writing is that I have read about the magic of BM for pink eye. I thought it made sense to use BM prophylactically for myself and DH, to help us not get the pink eye passed to us from DD. I also would like to use it as well as the abx in DD's eye for extra protection.
Â
However I have not had ANY luck self expressing milk into a target as small as an eye. Maybe there is something amiss with my milk ducts but the milk sprays EVERYWHERE in like a 90 degree radius except the target. :)
Â
So I've been washing my breast with warm water and soap, then self expressing into a tiny pyrex dish, then dropping the BM into our eyes (DH and myself---DD is proving difficult and it's hard enough even getting the abx drops in).
Â
However I read online that the container that the BM goes in if one is not expressing it directly into the eye needs to be sterile. I've just been washing it over and over again with warm water and dish soap. I thought we get water from the shower into our eyes so why would it need to be totally sterile? The BM isn't sitting in the pyrex dish for more than 10 seconds before it's used.
Â
But should I be more careful and start trying to use a sterile container? I don't want to actually give myself some eye infection while trying to prevent one.
Â
Also, is is normal for BM to temporarily blur vision and burn a little upon application to the eye?
