What are the iPad apps you like and dislike for educational purposes?

Here are some of my sons favorite:

Words with Friends

Bookworm

MadLibs

Mathmaster

Uno

Touch Four

Word Scramble

I Say

We have literally hundreds and hundreds of apps but the above "educational" ones are played the most.

Thank you. smile.gif It looks like only two are actually iPad apps. Do iPhone apps work on iPads?

Hmm- I didn't know there was difference! We had Iphone and Itouches first and all these apps transferred over.

Watch out for words with friends tho, its totally addictive as is bookworm!

I need to try some. First, I need to buy the ipad, but my dh has wanted a reason to buy one.

I am LOVING my ipad!!  I waited not-so-patiently for the 2nd generation because I am leary of first generation anything and it has been worth the wait. It is lightweight, fits in my bag and I can tether it to my Iphone 4 so I didn't need to buy the wireless option. Words with friends has been my recent downfall.  Oh- and its is a great e-reader!! I brought a ton of "books" on my vacation! The graphics for netflix and videos is great too.

Yes, iPhone apps work on the iPad. They may not be optimized for it, but they work fine. At least all the ones I've tried do.

I'm not much of one for educational software. We seem to prefer actual tools and resources here, rather than Learning Dressed Up as Games.

We like:

Animation Shop

Google Earth

Starwalk

iBird

most of the apps works on all the idevices~itunes will tell you if the app is compatible with your device. there have been some really comprehensive threads about apps.

right now the high usage apps in our home are:
better letters
popmath (fun and addictive math)
chicktionary
any of the "physics" apps~ cat physics, crayon (ds also loves the pc version that lets you build your own levels), touchphysics and of course angry birds wink1.gif
logic games~aces traffic, cut the rope, jelly car (so silly and fun), drop brick, tangrams, sudoku...

and reference apps like countriesLE (it's like the cia factbook), nutrition menu (like fitday), the wikipedia app (huge file but it gives you an offline version of wikipedia), ibird, shralp tide, 101 yoga poses, geocaching app...

SUBBING - going to order my iPad2 this week, sooooo excited, and getting a good list from this thread.

We've been working on reviewing a lot of iPhone/iPad apps at http://apps4ikids.com and focusing on their educational value.  It was how I had to pitch the purchase to my wife.

Teach me Kindergarten and Teach me first grade are some great applications for those ages.  And Stack the States has been great for learning some geography.

And Drawing Pad and Puppet Pals (lets you create a puppet show!) are also ones we've enjoyed as an outlet for creativity.  It really is much more than just a content consuming device.

Along the way, we've written a sudoku app for our 5 year old son, where you use stickers instead of numbers.  It's been a fun way to introduce him to logic puzzles.  It's free at http://apps4ikids.com/sticker-sudoku

Some I didn't see listed include:

  • Stack the Countries
  • Shake the States (different than Stack the States, which we also love, but listed above)
  • Kindle for iPad
  • Geocaching
  • iBird Pro
  • Audubon nature guides

I'm probably forgetting some, but those are our favorites anyway.

We've only had ours for a day, but we really love Math Bingo. Art Authorityis going to really come in handy next year. We're secular classical-esque so I'm pondering KnowledgeQuest's timeline/map app for the ancients and the Encyclopedia Britannica Egypt and Dino apps. That's only about as far as I've gotten, though.

Now, if only Mothering had an app...
