Moving to Twin Cities Area- Neighborhood Suggestions Please!
I live in Minneapolis, and I love it. I think you will find the area to be pretty AP friendly. There are a few AP playgroups (though I haven't been to any of them), and in general I think it's a crunchy area. South Minneapolis is very family friendly with lots of parks and other things to do. But there are plenty of great neighborhoods in St. Paul too (like Merriam Park and Highland Park).
I blog about family life in Minneapolis among other things, so you might check out the link in my profile for some of the fun stuff I've done with my 3 year old DD recently. Sorry for the Blatant Self Promotion. :)
Good luck with the move!
Welcome to MN! (or soon anyway) I live in southwest minneapolis and we have lots of very cool neighborhoods around here in lots of different price points. We have a thriving API community---if you want to join the group, search for TCAPI on yahoo groups. We have playgroups nearly everyday and a wonderful postpartum meal list set up (so be sure to sign up before you birth!)
Longfellow/Seward would be particularly good for a family that needs to commute to St. Paul too---they are right near the river that divides Mpls and St. Paul.
Good luck! We're try to get the snow to melt before you get here. :)
Readermaid- I'll definitely check out Merriam Park and Highland Park...and also your blog. Thanks so much!
Cileag- I've heard that The Seward/Longfellow area might be a good area for us. Thanks!
I'm so excited for the move. It sounds like a great area to raise a family...way better than LA! I just hope we move in the Summer, so we can ease into the Winter! =) I think it will take some getting used to! I'm from the Lake Tahoe area, so I'm used to a cold Winter, but not like that. My DH is from San Diego, so he's really nervous. Lol
Merriam Park and Highland Park in St Paul are great neighborhoods. Seward and Longfellow are great MPLS neighborhoods. But commuting from anywhere is pretty easy in the Twin Cities. I live in Merriam Park and spend a lot of time in Longfellow (my midwife is there also) I love both areas. Summer is a beautiful time of year here and there are tons of outdoor activities to do, especially around lakes. It's a good time to come an fall in love with the city. The Twin Cities is a huge biking mecca now and we have bike trails all over the city and outside the city for miles! It's especially lovely along the river. Winter is a real challenge, I admit to questioning why I live here right around February :) But don't let it discourage you, you forget about it once spring rolls around again!
I'm due with my first in July and have found great resources from my midwife for parenting groups and La Leche meetings. Maybe I'll see you at one!
Good Luck to you and your family on the big move!
My DH and I will be moving to MN in the next 3-6 months from Los Angeles. We'll probably rent for a bit before buying. My DH will be working in St. Paul, so I don't want him to have a horrible commute (although we're used to bad traffic coming from Southern California, so we could possibly deal with it for the right area). I'm pregnant with our first, so we'd love to find an area with lots of like minded families (AP, BFing/EBFing, CDing, BWing, HB friendly). We're looking for a safe area with things to do nearby (restaurants, coffeeshops, parks, yoga studios, etc). We love to walk and ride bikes too. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! =)
