Baby wants boob...all.night.long.

Hi! I'm pretty new around here so perhaps this kind of thing has been discussed before but if anyone has any pointers for me, I'd be much appreciative!

This is our first baby and we made the decision to co-sleep. Usually, he starts out on the floor (we've a floor bed) on his own little bed and he USED to sleep five, maybe six hours before waking. Then we went and moved countries (crossing at least three time zones in the meanwhile) and now, its been four weeks and I still cannot get him back to that long first stint. I'd be happy with even four hours but now I can barely get two out of him. greensad.gif At first, I think he had a few night terrors because he was often crying in his sleep but now I'm 99% sure he's over that and its just a habit of frequent half waking he's got himself into where he just wants to nurse. I know he's over jet lag and he knows nighttime is for sleeping but he just wants to suck on the boob all.night.long. He refuses the pacifier and gets VERY mad when I try and replace the boob with it but I'm so sore!!! Last nights effort resulted in both of us crying ourselves back to sleep after I don't know how long. He's now five months old. I don't want to result to a cry it out method at all. We've plans to get Dad more involved with putting him down to sleep at night but how do I get him to sleep for longer stints to begin with before putting him in bed with us?

Thoughts anyone?

I just joined this forum tonight, and I am so glad to read stories from people who parent like me!

To the topic at hand. DS is four months old, and when he was 2.5 months we moved from Canada to Japan. The earthquake hit, and now baby and I are taking refuge in New Zealand. In Japan we started co-sleeping because that was the norm there, and I have continued it in NZ in order to be as least disruptive as possible. He had no difficulty adjusting to the new time difference in Japan (perhaps because he was so small) but it has been hard for him in NZ.

DS still sleeps well at night (two stints of about four hours each), but he stopped napping unless my boob was in his mouth. I assumed it was a comfort thing and put up with the sore nipples :P I came across this article though, and it really helped me to guess what might be going on. Hopefully it will help you too!

It could be that your move coincided with the infamous "4 month sleep regression." We didn't actually experience it....we got hit with the next one!

Maybe just give it a bit more time and it may work itself out on it's own.

Also, could he be teething? That can have a big impact!
