What do you use when you get those "24/48 hour" bugs?

Adult's or kids. There seems to be something going around here and any new ideas are welcome! Especially of the "nauseous fixing" kind.  puke.gif

If it's me, usually nothing. Maybe crystalized ginger or real ginger soda if theres nausea involved for me, dh, or ds. I will take immodium if I have uncomfortable diarrhea that makes me rush to the bathroom every 5 minutes and stay there for a good 20 min each trip(or give it to DH if he has it-probably wouldn't give it to DS though, not at his age anyhow.) Then I would also probably take/give some homeopathic meds, we have a ton of homeopathic doctors in the family.

ETA: also, bananas, rice, applesauce, toast/crackers, or yogurt

Right if I feel something coming on or see my kids sneezing or starting a runny nose, we all take loads of vitamin D. And then I find drinking kombucha helps with the healing process.

You mean the vomit and diarrhea bugs? Like rotavirus and norwalk viruses? Typically we don't use anything. Those things just have to run their course, and stuff like anti-diarrheals just slows it down. I stop food, until four hours after the last vomit, and just offer small quantities of fluids. Then we restart food slowly, starting with easy-to-digest foods. We usually start with a broth, with the fat skimmed off.

We do use ginger and peppermint, to soothe the stomach once the worst of it is past, and I'll usually stop liquid cow's milk for a few days afterwards, since some of those viruses cause a temporary lactose intolerance, due to intestinal injury. My homemade yogurt is cultured long enough that the lactose is gone, so we stick with that.

If I have a feeling it's coming, the adults take 50,000 IUs of vit D3 for 3 days and the kids take their larger dose (depending on their weight, homefirst.com has a chart) for 3 days.  Sometimes we will dodge it completely, other times it just limits the duration of the illness.  Most of the time when we have a stomach bug the vomiting part lasts one to two hours and the rest of the 24 hours is just being tired and/or having a headache.
