... even if the woman is not pregnant.

Honestly, when I had my first child in 1978, the esteemed ob/gyn at the local medical center told all of the parents at the gathering that there is never a reason NOT to do a caesarean section, and I guess he has now been proven completely correct.

When this ob/gyn died, he was on the obituary page with my homebirth doctor.

I don't understand this at all.  What in the world!  Why don't they say anything about the woman?  Did she not realize she wasn't pregnant?

She had a hysterical pregnancy.  Doctors see it all of the time.  A sonogram should have been done, some palapatation, or someone should have checked for a fetal heart tone.  What did the external fetal monitor show? Was there an internal fetal monitor used?

Do you think she got a bill for the surgery?

When I first saw this, I thought it was one of those April Fool's Day joke articles.  It is dated in April of last year.  But this article is on several news sources, there is a thread on this at allnurses.com, and I followed a link to the North Carolina Medical Board website, where Dr. Dorrette Grant's license can be verified.  Apparantly this case was brought to the attention of the state medical board, though it's unclear what disciplinary measures were taken.

One of the articles said that an intern did an ultrasound and could not find a heartbeat, so it was treated as fetal demise.  When labor induction didn't work, they performed a c-section.

It appears that no physical exam was done.  Even a cervical check should have raised some questions, and did no one attempt to discern the position of the baby?  This is a really bizarre situation overall.
