Dentist, any things to avoid besides fluoride

I know a good holistic dentist who came with recommendations, but we are going to see a dentist who does natural widening. He has digital x-rays. Is there any thing to avoid other than fluoride. I'm assuming I should avoid the fluoride since I've read many negative things about it. Most recently I saw an article that fluoride causes liver cancer in rats.

We saw a pediatric dentist for our children.  They do use amalgam fillings and fluoride, but we requested them not to be used with our children.  They were very gentle and kind with our littlest, who had never seen a dentist.  I think those are the two main issues with mainstream dentistry.  We know that one of our girls (maybe two) may need braces, so we are going to look at some different options, perhaps with a different dentist.  If you don't like the dentist, you certainly can see a different one.
