my 8 week bf babys poo has been bright green for over a week now. What could be causing this?

Are you taking an iron supplement?

Iron supplements will turn poop green. Probably more common than an inbalance.

The first ideas I thought of were already mentioned:
oversupply, resulting in too much foremilk
iron supps

And I would add to those that sometimes baby has been exposed to a GI virus. Those infections can sometimes be very mild, so that the only symptom you see is unusual stools. It will usually be unusually stinky, though, too.

Are you nursing on one side or both sides at one feeding?  If both, maybe you have over-supply which would cause the for/hind milk imbalance.  DS had the same thing as your DC for a week and I was really concerned but as soon as I started nursing on only one side per feeding the issue cleared up right away.  Maybe try nursing from just one side per feeding for 2 days and see what happens!

Is the poop pond-scum green-- bright?  If so, I would think it's likely foremilk/hindmilk imbalance.  We struggled with that a lot when my daughter was an infant.

Thanks ladies. The poo is pond scumy green, kind of bright.. I only take prenatal vitamins and a calcium supplement. Nothing else. I also only nurse from one side per feeding and have almost always done it that way since I make so much milk so i dont really think its hindmilk foremilk imbalance.. I do drink lots of red zinger tea. Im addicted, and drink it in place of my coffee and now drink it iced since its so refreshing on ice... could that be it?

Is there a La Leche League around you?  A LLL leader would likely be able to help.  Or a hospital lactation center?  Or a ped could help.  I have learned that frothy green poo can mean malabsorption of breastmilk.

Im going to his 2 month check up this week. I dont think its malabsorbtion since he has doubled his birth weight and is happy and very healthy looking. He hardly fusses unless he is hungry or tired. So I dont know. Hmmm.

Does he have any other symptoms? Any weight gain problems? Any other problems with breastfeeding, discomfort for baby. etc.?

If the ONLY issue is green poop, personally, I wouldn't worry about it. Green poop can be a variation of normal.

I second madcap.  If he's happy and healthy and gaining weight, no worries.  But if the ped worries and starts you worrying I'd definitely see a lactation specialist or get in tough with LLL before taking a more "medicalized" approach.  We got formula forced on us (thrust into our hands) by our former ped.
